At the time, this was possibly one of the poorest villages in China

with people's annual income around $40-50. While the women are doing

all kinds of work, the men are normally out hunting for prey, or

working on the very little land that is suitable for rice cultivation

in the area. In the past two years, tourism has changed a lot of

things in Basha.

I like that she is looking at you. I also like the softness around the picture. This is my favorite picture as it has the old time picture feel. Also is that your daughter on the left? ~ Micki

Thanks for the comments. The edges are actually like that on the negative as well, which must be due to some kind of mistake, but I also think it adds to the picture. I am also very happy that I managed to catch the moment when the girl was looking at me. And no, the girl on the left is not my daughter, she is also local. I have no children yet, especially not that big (I am 24:-). Thanks once again.

This is very moving and poignant. Well done. It's amazing how so-called "mistakes" can be so vital to one's photography at times. You still get credit for being the one the mistake happened to and for recognizing how well it works. Yes, there's great power in the girl looking back, especially as she stands so strongly against the seated woman in profile, who has a more statuesque quality. You've got a tableau here that's alive and in the moment yet it has a timeless quality as well. I almost can't help but feel connected to the girl and to the photo. Many photos accomplish a connection to a particular person in the photo (though that in itself is a great accomplishment). Few also establish a connection to the photo itself as a photo. That, to me, is so rewarding.
