I really like this. Thought the same thing as you when i saw the thumb and so smiled when i read the title - excellent choice :). Very different for a surf shot. I found myself feeling you could add a little contrast in photoshop and then burn the guy to get a silhoette. I think that, coupled with printing it LARGE would look great hanging on a wall :)

Photo re-uploaded with a slight tweak to curves and saturation of cyan channel.

Coming back to this i think it's even stronger now. I like the added punch!
