A reflector to fill in those shadows would have helped a lot.

Very good. It's too bad Mom's hand isn't lower (and out of the frame) and it's too bad Mom has a shadow across part of her face, but it's colorful and loving and warm.

Nothing in life is perfect. I think this photograph is probably priceless in your eyes. It certainly is precious.

just an idea: why not blend the two versions of this image so that the child is in color and the mother in black &white?

I say superb image and to heck with technical considerations because of the tenderness, love and warmth that is captured here. 7/7

I agree. Who cares if the mother's hand is in the frame (btw: cropping at the hand, you would have lost all the colors of the clothes and most of the bodies of your subjects making the picture alot less warm).

 

I've been seeing black and white pictures where the kids are colored in poster shops since the mid 90s. It would not be as original as this.
