David when I see such an image like this I am very pleased with the old building, the old sign and especially the old delivery van. The old water tower in the background is a big plus to the image. But the whole time that I'm looking at the image my mind is saying, "How could this have been done without showing the cyclone fence and the telephone wires that are overhead?"

Had I been here taking the photos, I probably would have climbed over the fence (assuming there is now dog protecting the place) and gotten some more close up views that kept the fence and wires out of the image. I don't know why I have such an aversion to fences and overhead wires, but I'm so pleased that other photographers don't let these distractions bother them. Otherwise I'd never be able to see images such as this.

Thanks for showing it because I find it quite interesting, even with my own hang ups on distractions.

Thanks for commenting. You jumped on this one before I could even finish my download. You may be right about the fence, but this was not an area where you would want to be jumping into someone's fenced property. (Well, at least, not without a lot more testosterone producing equipment than I have.) I have to admit that given the opportunity to not have the fence, I would probably have gone that way with it. But there really was no way to avoid it, and I kind of like the contrast and silvery colors it brings into the pic along with the water tower. I don't find it too big a distraction in this case since the colorful surroundings help to overpower it. I do appreciate your viewpoint. Regards

I appreciate Shawn's "eye" for an interesting composition, usually abstract, and I admire David's style of documentary images so I'm trying to look at this through the lenses of both your cameras......I like the fence and powerlines, they're part of the story, the locked gate clearly says "stay out" and although there are power lines this old building looks like perhaps the "lights" have been out for quite a while. Great warm colors.....red, rust and yellow. The only thing that could of made this better is some storm clouds.

Shawn has a great eye, but part of the point that is being made here is an urban decay kind of statement. That being the case, those things you wouldn't want in a "pretty" picture are fine here. They just help prove the point. But I understand what Shawn is saying. As far as the clouds, I think you are just trying to hurt my feelings with that one. We get about 10 or less inches of rain a year here. Even then we don't get any really nice storms like we had in Iowa where I grew up, or where you are. It is something I really miss. My kin in Iowa think I'm nuts when I root for a nasty thunderstorm, but they don't know what it's like to live in this dull weather country.

I see you're testing Ted Orland's Photographic Truth: "A good photo cannot be taken in Fresno." (From the poster, "Even Ansel Adams Has to Make a Living.")

And, having actually been in Fresno once, I say, good for you that you didn't hop the fence.

Bravo for the drive to discover.

Quite happy to see you back on PN, no matter how briefly. I took a seminar once at UCSC, and I can't remember if Ted Orland was one of the two people putting it on or not. (It's that CRS manifesting itself once again) At any rate, I'm thinking he co-wrote Art & Fear, which I enjoyed. I have not heard that quote before, but it will have plenty of competition to stand out amongst all the Fresno jokes. Take care.

Since most of Mr. Orland's pronouncements appear to be valid, I guess I shall have to cease making any attempts at photos in Fresno. Wait a minute. Didn't he say "good photos?" Well, since I never make those, I can keep clicking away. Thanks for your help, or almost help. Peace

By the way, if you have not read "Art and Fear," you might enjoy it.
