WOW, three anonymous 7/7 rates? Hmmmm, something smells a bit fishy. Perhaps it's because Maria (the subject) has rated this photo a 7/7. Care to explain why this photo deserves such a high rate Maria, other than it's a photo of you? A shadow that splits the face, which really pronounces the age under her eyes, the B&W conversion is flat, and the composition is haphazard.

Blown out highlight on the right cheek: Background Horizontals cutting the face and head: Intrusive OoF White dots on the floorboards: Poor DoF slection leaving the RH Hair OoF and Left hand side IF.

 

I could not give this Technically 7 of 7. Technically and composition I would expect much more from a first year photography student.

 

Artistic merit: well it has a pleasing candid appeal capturing an happy woman`s face, something nice for the family album I would assume, ceratinly no where near the artistic merit of 7 of 7.

 

 

I do not put a lot of faith in the ratings from this forum: however whilst some of the comments carry baggage, most are sincere and foster learning, as has this been written

I agree with Tabatha and William. This is at most an average shot, and that is being generous. I am fairly new to Photo.net, I was surprized and disappointed to see this at the top today.

Only one annotation: It is not a conversion BW, but I have used one film BW (Ilford FP4)

Your point is taken that this is the first time your photgraphs have rated this high: I do not know if this is fact or not and I do not mind, to me it is irrelevant save that this technically pedestrian, albeit happy image is at the front of the ratings is silly in the extreme - that is a comment on the ratings system not your image nor directed at you.

 

And you must realize YOU have submitted the photograph for critique - essentially in the foregoing that is what you have received: they are not `bad comments` but [apart from Tabitha`s questioning the points system and my comment indicating I all but ignore the points], all the words used are to describe the technical and artistic merit [or lack of it] of the image you submitted.

 

You might disagree with my critiques given on your work, but sir please do not consider that I have made bad comments.

 

My critique of this image is based upon 6 years of study in photography; 30 years of professional shooting that put bread on the family table; four more years to work through a doctorate; 25 years teaching and judging in several competitions; in my spare time I take high school classes and teach the love of photography.

 

This forum is for learning that is why we submit questions and images to get opinions

 

My sincere advice, if you do not want my honest, experienced critique that I took time and effort to give: then do not submit your work in a public forum for that critique.

 

And yes, sir, I consider your above remark concluding these critiques as `bad comments` to be an insult; and I am exercising my right of reply.

Tabitha you can see that Mr Albanese used a BW film. Read, before write, my dear. No conversion. I really whant to see your wonderful photos. For sure you are a master of photography, so I'm curius. Please, share with us your masterpices. And your lovely fare too.

Maria, I never said I was a "master of photography", but I do know when I see a great photo, and sorry to say this is NOT an example of one. However, it's obvious you think otherwise since you rated this a 7/7.

I suspescted this trouth when i saw you head not readed any thig about the tecnician way in do this photo. Anyway a portrait is not a way for alterate the reality. So, if the model is a baby, a 40 years old woman, or and on age person, the photographer has not to cancel the time sign on the face, but to capture the saul, the expression, the caracter, etc.

Go on my page and you'll can see that I completelly agree with you. I posted a message on the general forum preciselly on the subject.

This picture appeared to me during my rating, so I rated it 7,7. I thing that is a duty of mine to rate picture like is in my opinion, like all of you do. My opinion is one, the same I wrote on the forum, but it was not accepted by the owner, so I do like all the other on this web site do. I've no problem to tell the way I rate all the picture that I rate, in anonimus way, id est during the visiting on "rate photos", or when I give a look on the top photo and I see somethnik that I like in particolar way, id est not in anonimous way. Like you do, I suppose. I like this picture and I rated as is in my opinion. In the same way that I'll do with yours in the day you will decide to share it with us. All the best to you. Sincerelly.

Maria, there is a term for what you are doing. It's called Mate Rating. Not only have you over-rated this photo from Gianluigi, you have over-rated just about every other photo he has submitted for critique. Like many others, you have abused the ratings system.

or what is you real name, you've abused of your full anonimity. I think that this not correct, in honest way. You can see, if you have time, tha Mr Albanese has a lot of photos, all of this in crithic. Fore sure I do not rated all hos photos, and when I rate it only some time with 7,7. Take an eye, please, before write. Is beter, don't you think so? I rate the photos that I like. I don't like to offend people so, when I do not like a photo, I go over. I'm not on this site for offend other people with bad rates, alltought this is a sport that many people loves, in this site. As matter of fact many persons has not a portfolio, do not share his owen photos with the others, but rate all the other member of this communuty, for the most of the time very low. I do not understand ..the details 23 ratings of this photo is 4.43 -4.46 ..in the top photos ???? one year ago "recent ratings" is 6-6.40 ??? i am confused , but in the end many times is natural to feel confused in PN.
