The interesting thing is that my model was totally incapable of replicating the pose used by Ingre's model - her left leg just would not stretch. My theory is that Ingres painted his Odalisque in three sections - he worked left to right and used a camera-lucida. This explains why the back is stretched, the right arm elongated and the left leg so impossibly positioned. C&C welcome. Cheers. Don Link to comment

bjcarlton 0 Posted April 20, 2009 Now that you mention it, the left leg in Ingres's image can't actually be attached to the hip. The line of the thigh seems to point to her abdomen. It's convincing until you start to actually think about it. A pre-digital Photoshopping. Link to comment
