Okay - so you guys beat me to the punch. :-) I was going to leave a comment that I'm not sure how/if this one would go over. I'm iffy on it, myself. :-) SO ... thank you, very much, for the kudos. This image was taken last February when I went to Howard's show in Bucks County outside of Philadelphia.

My main question is about the pole on the left. I cloned out a yellow road sign ... that was easy. But the pole, that covers almost the entire vertical height of the image ... well, I don't think I could do it. Is it distracting? I desaturated the pole about "-65" and I also desaturated the red in the bridge just a tad.

The pole is hardly noticable, Lou Ann. Your desaturation worked nicely on this composition. I like the neutral background and the subtle red of the bridge to draw your eyes right there. This would make a very nice Christmas card. I think it could work well in sepia, too.

So not fair, how come you get snow? That weatherman has promised me for days that we would get the white stuff and all I get is rain.... What you have done here with the bridge and snow is magical, perfect contrast and comp.. Great job, so I assume you had a good time at your moms? Cheers Cole

Kind of a "To grandmothers house we go" kind of photo. This would make a nice card. I barely noticed the pole. I also like the drop shadow a lot. Congratulations Lou Ann.

Thanks again everyone! I'm SO glad that you all enjoy this shot. Cole - it was taken LAST February (2006)! In Buffalo, while I was at my mom's the temps were in the 50's and it was sunny (almost unheard of for Western New York at this time of year) and here in the DC area this week it's in the upper 60's and should be clear for a few days. :-)

I also had to go back to find the pole...the desat really helped it to blend in. Did you take any shots of the other side of the road leading to the bridge? Did it also have that great fence? The subtle red is good...I think I might prefer it a little more saturated, but that's just me...I love the look of snow against red. :) This could definitely be your Christmas card this year!

Hi Lou Ann! What do you think of a black and white version from the black layer of the CMJN mode turned in negative (see above) ?

very nice LouAnn! like so many others have said, the pole is barely noticable. in fact, i don't know that i would have seen it if not for your comment; it blends in so well with the trees. it has been a very long time since i have seen a snowy winter. we are just now getting some fall colors here. hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I can't tell you folks how pleased I am at your responses to this image. When I look at it, it still makes me cold. :-) There are so many stories just with my attempt to photograph this bridge. I had come up to Bucks County for Howard's show ... discovered that it was a county with lots of covered bridges ... decided that I'd find some of them and photograph them ... wasn't expecting it to snow ... worried about where I could park my truck close enough so that I didn't have to walk forever, but far enough to be out of the shot ... and then I realized that I had completely forgotten my memory card (!!!) and spent several hours driving all over Bucks County looking for a photography store to buy a new card..........

ANYWAY - here are some more detailed responses to a couple of your comments. I will post a couple of other shots from the area as attachments here next. Henri - I tried several different approaches to B&W. I really would prefer this in B&W. But the slight red in the bridge is very attractive to me. I was torn. I'm still not decided.

There were several signs leading up to both sides of the bridge ... they made it very difficult to get a shot without something distracting in a difficult spot. The image that I posted for critique here is the best angle that I could get with the least amount of cloning.

So is the town named after your family? LOL OR a relative... hmmm...ME I would have waited till dark unscrewed the sign and taken it home with me.. I like all the versions, but I still love the original, the color and lighting are perfect, and I keep expecting to see a sleigh riding through at any moment. Great job cropping out those signs btw... Cole

Interestingly enough, the *spelling* of my last name is unique to my family ... I have first cousins and aunts & uncles with that last name, but that's it. We think that our grandfather's father's family changed the spelling of the name due to some scandal that happened in the family. There are literally NO other people in the world with our last name. Now, as to this other spelling, who knows. We can't find any direct link to other families, even with names like Aschbacher, Apfelbacher, Applebacher, etc.... I think it's rather interesting!

Very nice shot Lou Ann. Is that how winter looks like in your parts of the country? I ask because we are used to a little more of that white stuff. Good colours, and composition. By the way... Thanks for your kind comment, and rating. It was very quiet, and so was even my wife. Best regards from Tarnaby!

I think that was supposed to be fun poking at your wife, huh, Torfinn? :-) Um ... this is what we call a "light dusting" of snow. It can be less, and occasionally it can be a lot more. This place is farther north than where I live (about 3 hours drive). BUT, where I grew up (about 8 hours north), we were near the Great Lakes, and there was always a LOT of snow ... usually several feet that fell in the fall would still be there in March under several more feet. THAT was fun! :-) Here are some pictures of my parents and of me in seven feet of snow that fell around Christmas Day in 2001. :-D

I like the subdued colour here - and as the pole is the same grey as all the trees it works fine and is part of the scene. Nicely composed with the colour top right. Prefer colour to B&W. Nice and atmospheric - shiverrrr,,,
