I found somewhere your post about lens for 400D. Looking at this photo, it seems you manage just fine with whatever you use now. Many people can't do it with the best equipment. Not to mention your designer skills. I think, you are very good. If you really want something more flexible for available light, Sigma 30mm f1.4 would be perfect for your portrait style. It costs $400, but I have seen some amazing sharp photos done with that lens wide open. Other than that, 50mm f1.8 from Canon ($80) is perfect for the the price.
