Out with the old and in with the corporate new. This is a great juxaposition of signs and certainly tells a story. The way of the world is for bigger and better corporate businesses and the little Mom and Pop stores/businesses are a thing of the past, and I for one will miss them. Keep recording them David, it's a part of our cultural history that will all too soon be gone.

The colors here are terrific. The common and the unique. The boring and the interesting. The new and the old. The staying and the leaving.

It's good.

Thanks Doug and Susan for taking time to look and expecially for commenting. As you may have noticed, I have had a flurry of activity lately. I've found some interesting (to me!!??) subjects, and had the time to work on them. I may not be good, but I'm having a terrific time. I do hope that with people like you and some other really nice people here I will get better. But even if I don't, I'm having the time of my life.

... and maybe even an occasional comment from a ne're-do-well won't hurt.

In your bio you state, "I like old things..." and so do I. But I have an aversion to showing distracting new things in conjunction with the old and beautiful. For this image I'm sure that I would have either moved left so as to hide the McDonald's sign behind the Well's sign, or I would have moved right in an attempt to eliminate it from view. If all else failed I would have used PS to erase the sucker!

So, I have something to learn too, and that is to be more open minded about the images that I'm shooting. I'm sorry to hear that the old sign will be leaving. Maybe the new dealer will find a way to keep the old sign as part of the new dealership.

PS, I like your image, even with the new sign in it.

As you correctly deduced, the point was the juxtaposition. I did take another shot from the right of this position that has just the sign in it. But with this one, I just love the irony of the two signs competing with each other and the tension it creates. By this time next year, this sign will be replaced by a much bigger and fancier Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, or whatever, sign. That will provide visual continuity, if not photographic interest or environmental improvement.

Looks like Mr. Well hasn't been well since McDonald's has moved in. I guess the pressure of all the billions of burgers took it's toll, eh? Interesting framing, and a collection of colours. I wonder what the two yellow arches in the McDonald's sign mean. Could it be someone bending over? Or the pleasant features of a gal? Or maybe that guy went to Egypt and saw some camels? Cheers, Micheal

Thanks very much. In retrospect, I realize I have overprocessed the image, but I do love these kinds of juxtapositions.

Great capture of something that I consider my favorite subject: old signs. Sadly we have few of those around where I live, so I'll have to do with looking at your work - which isn't exactly a bad thing :)

Well done!

Frank
