Dan....I'm just a newbe...but IMO the shot would be better if the player had some room to run in the crop. It might even be better as a horizontal although I'm not sure what you captured in the original...High school football is SO hard because of the stadium lights! I just bought Nikon's 70-200 f2.8 vr and have only played with it for football a couple of times...the lense HELPS but it's still hard! bad stadium light is an understatement. The crop here is what i got. Nothing's been changed except white balance (i need one of those expo disc thingies), sharpness and saturation.

 

Be happy with 2.8 mate, it sure beats F4.
