Trail Bridge

LenMarriott

Tripod mounted, Metered (incident reading from middle of bridge) exposure @ f16. Overcast. Converted to B&W in PS using Channel Mixer settings to emulate Tri-X. (R-25, G-35, B-40) Best, LM.

Nice image and composition. Very mysterious. Two places for improvement in my view. The image is just a tad soft. Not sure if it was out of focus or this is just an artifact of resizing for the web. There are a lot of interesting textures and tones in the dark areas surrounding the bridge. I would try bringing out more detail there.

Bill, Thanks for taking the time & effort. It is truly appreciated. I'm going to take the way out that you offered me; apparent unsharpness due to the process of getting it to your screen or perhaps it's low contrast. I have a 12" x 18" enlargement of the colour version of this one & it appears fine to me. (might say something about my eyes:-) The point of focus for this one was the vegetation on the left of the bridge, halfway across. This, admittedly, is a Channel Mixer down & dirty conversion to B&W. (R-25, G-35, B-40) As for the hidden tones and textures, I offer a tweaked (Shadow\Highlights [shadow 15] enhancement) version. Best, LM.

Bill, Perhaps THAT'S why I felt compelled to whistle low & nervously glance from side to side while taking a meter reading from the lonely center of the bridge. :-) Best, LM.

Spotted in the fall of 2006 at Grant's Woods, a 50 acre conservation

area, near Orillia, On. Originally in colour I converted it to B&W

to reduce it to shapes, tones, & textures. The colour version can be

viewed in my 2006 folder. Your comments\views will be gratefully

received. Best, LM.

Just changing this to b/w has changed the mood from serene and peaceful to eerie and scary! Fantastic image in either colour or b/w but with the b/w version, I suspect there may be trolls under there. I prefer the colour.

Tom, Thanks for happening by. "...the natural clutter...". Yep that'd describe me to a 'T'. :-)

William, Glad you like it. The beauty of shooting in colour is that you can then convert to B&W and get two very different moods from one shot. Best, LM.

Jan, So you tend to agree with WJ (above)? Interesting what others see in these two versions. The spooky side never occured to me because I was there & so am too close to the original scene, but you both have a point. "....Trolls under there...."? The only Trolls I saw that day were both carrying cameras and related gear & were named Len (Marriott) and Greg (McCracken). Best, LM.

Very interesting image (and discussion). To me, light is everything in this scene. The brighter area in the center of the bridge and the one further into the woods (with its intact details) makes us feel a sort of seclusion there (whether we view it as serene or eerie). A very special shot, imho.

Steve, On reflection, the light was indeed the element which drew me to photograph this scene. It doesn't appear to be as moody in the colour version, nor did it appear so at the time of exposure. Interesting change. Though there were a few other people around that day it still looks secluded in spite of being relatively close to a populated area. I'm happy you liked it. I'm getting more action on this submission for critique than with most (of mine). There must be something here I missed first time around. Other's views are bringing out aspects I had not considered before. Win, win. Best, LM.

sme beautiful light on the bridge in a nice and traditional landscape which works very nicely here. A bit of mystery that I find appealing in nice b_w.

I guess the quality of light on the bridge was my first attraction. The mystery you speak of in this B&W version doesn't seem to be as deep in the colour version. Many thanks for your visit. Best, LM.
