caught in the early morning, so its a little bit dark, but i though

that added to the mood anyway.

comments and critique are always welcome and appreciated.

i happen to disagree with you about the darkness of this photo adding to the mood. the light suggests a soft and gentle moment, when this bird is in fact catching its first prey of the day. i would brighten this up using the Levels tool in photoshop. but i do love the light and shadow play on the birds body. GOOD SHOT!

enjoy.

ok, guess i will brighten it up then, at least the other one taken in the same session. I just felt like it didnt seem right, the bird became a little yellow (a white balance fix would probably be the way to go) and it just seemed a little bit too ordinary. But i am begining to think my monitor may be a little bit light, so that could also be part of the issue.

thanks for the comment and critique, i'll take it into effect when i upload the next few photos (which are all a little bit on the dark side).

Dan, it is all in what you want your photograph to express.

To begin with, it is a great capture. You have to question how the fish is ever going to go down that narrow throat. If you what it to be a bird picture, it would be served by overall lightening. If you want it to capture the ambiance of a quiet early morning, then leave it where it is and let it retain its uniqueness or lighten just enough to pick up some of the highlights.

As a personal opinion, I like it this way. I would like to see a little cropped of the right and the top, but that is a personal preference. The only thing that could really add to this image is a slight suggestion of environment in the background.

thank you very much for your comment, Garry. Conforming to the rule of thirds and moving the bird would probably be a good idea. As far as background is concerned, wait a few days, i have shots with background activity (just waiting to submit for critiques so i can raise my quota).

Dan, please do not suggest that I meant applying the Rule of Thirds, the hair on the back of my neck bristles every time I hear that phrase. I do look forward to seeing your upcoming posts. However, I can't help with your quota if you mean points, because I do not know how to numerically rate either aesthetics or originality.

I just recently got into bird or nature photography in a very limited way and I can see that I have a lot to learn.

ok, so maybe not to the extreme part of the rule then... this photo actually isnt cropped (which i didnt even realise), and since it was taken at iso 800, its too noisy to bring it in any closer than its already at. Oh well...

Bird photography is great, espcially when photographing birs like these, they are quite graceful. Sometimes you have to wait a long time to ever get a picture of a bird flying towards you though... they usually just fly away.
