tylerwind 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Generally there aren't huge waves at Folly Beach but when a hurricane comes, they get pretty large! I captured this guy through the rain bailing out on this big wave--let me know what you think! Thanks! Link to comment
andretorres 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Moment well captured! Would be a great shot if it were not blurred (probably long zoom with insufficient shutter speed) Link to comment
tylerwind 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Thanks--you're right! I was shooting hand held at 300mm, the day was overcast (obviously since the hurricane was just making landfall), and I was shooting through the rain--so, considering the circumstances, I was pleased how things turned out. You're right though, would have been fantastic on a crystal clear day when I didn't have to shoot from under a shelter. Link to comment
pjmeade 12 Posted October 11, 2006 Hello Tyler, I think this is a great capture. I tried shooting surfing recently, it was less easy than I expected and I just had to photograph in a gale and had IS. I think this captures a great moment, it's very dynamic and tells a very good story. I shot this one in North Devon http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?topic_id=1481&msg_id=00IIij&photo_id=5032958&photo_sel_index=0 Cheers. Pete Link to comment
Landrum Kelly 65 Posted October 14, 2006 This is really a nice effort, Tyler, but shows the difficulty of getting good surf pictures: getting close enough! I see that you shot this with a zoom that goes to 300mm, and this was presumably shot at full extension. The problem is getting enough light to shoot fast at that focal length. I like that you have captured the offshore wind blowing the tops of the waves off and back out to sea--almost a must for good surfing, since it holds the waves up a bit longer. This would have been easier with more sun (and therefore faster shutter), of course, but it is still a good effort. --Lannie Link to comment
tylerwind 0 Posted October 16, 2006 Thanks Lannie! Yes, I gave it a good shot! There wasn't anywhere close to enough light for 300mm (which is what I was shooting) and plus, I had to shoot from under a shelter since it was raining (otherwise I could have gotten about 50 yards closer) and the hurricane that was directly overhead and the rain it was producing really hurt the amount of light my lens would gather. It was fun making an effort though! :) Link to comment
take-n-images 0 Posted August 18, 2007 Tyler, Classic but calm bail out man! Unfortunately Folly water is nothing to rave about. Try some filters or use custom WB on your camera to get a bit more color. Folly is a beach break so waves are not consistent like a reef break but sand bars @ 10th or by the pier offer some(little bit) of consistency. If waves are 6ft+ then it should be going off pretty much everywhere. This guy bailed because he's experienced enough to know that when the wave forms a horizon its going to close out. How long did he ride the wave before this pic? Looks like he had his fun on it and didn't want to get caught in the whitewash to paddle out for another. Let me know when you go back out. Its something awsome to shoot guys who rip the wave. Later Mike Fish TAKE-N-IMAGES.COM Link to comment
