When this image is examined closer, it is clear that the entire background is filled with compression artifacts and dodging marks. The face itself is too dark. Not my cup of tea.

Remarkably posed and composed. Lovely shade of sepia. I agree that the dodging halo is a little distracting. I would suggest if your initial image was a little too dark there are more subtle ways of bringing out highlight detail if you have access to Photoshop or equivalent. For example duplicate the background layer and set the mode to soft. Select a soft edge paint brush and the colour white. Then simply paint the facial highlights back in.

Well Kaushik, although what John and Milo have said is in their techical way are probably correct and good suggestions. To me it is a very fine and strong portrait, and I think the lighting is superb......Jim
