Very very very beatifull Kim, and I like both, you know my 'hang' to blue colors ;D....

I can feel this solitude feeling seeing this, bravo Kim, for this beautifull picture (and I did see it in large version)

Wow. How barren. And THAT is supposed to be my next road trip ... the Southwest. Interesting. :-)

Actually, I'd love a brief overview of what you did to this, Kim. I see two things ... one that you changed the color, and two that you added some sort of glow. Would you be willing to share your secrets with us? ;-)

If I remember correctly, I duplicated the layer, then inverted, selected "color" in the layers menu and flattened. Created another layer, used Gaussian blur at about 40 pixels, adjusted to about 75% opacity, then adjusted contrast somewhat.

This is so striking! The original is ok, but your version is really eye-catching. The colors and light work so well to convey the desolate/almost other-worldly feeling of the place. Would love to see this on a wall.

I've driven by this place a dozen times or more - but never took the road to the top. It's actually a favorite stretch of highway for me - Raton Pass, Clayton,N.M., Stateline, Dumas and Dalhart - brings back alot of memories - driving from Dallas to Colorado. Nice one Kim ... (-;

We have tried about three times to get the timing right to go up to the volcano, but always seemed to time it after 4:00 pm, when they are closed. This time, we were there mid-morning. Ed thought it would be cool to get pictures from the top of the volcano, so we did the one-mile trek around the top! Nearly finished me off, as I have a thing with heights!! I had to only look at the path climbing up, although at the top when I stuck my camera in front of my face, I got very brave looking over the edge.

A picture of it taken from the Highway ..... not mine.

So you're telling me that's a foot path and not a road ?! ...... I thought you could *drive* up there !

What you see there IS a road and you drive to the top. AT the top, (where the little dip is you see up there) you can walk around the rim and it's about a mile. There is still quite a climb, but you drive up most of the volcano. :)

Kim, very hard to pick a favorite between the two. Initially I was leaning towards the blue but after I saw the larger ver. of the original posting, it was hard to decide...like an alien landscape, but still very real! I like 'em both equally.

Thanks, everyone. I am entering this one in a juried show; we'll see if it gets picked to be in it. I never know what they are looking for!

I like your loaded version. The original looks somehow normal but your converted image has a very stong poetic & isolated feel to it. I like it a lot.

Hi Kim, wonderful treatment you did on this!

Like the composition on the photo and agree that what you did with light is the right thing to do. Makes the image powerful and with and interesting mood, than the original due to the mid day light doesn?t has, well done!

Thanks, all. I was trying to make this look like it was hot, like it would be on an active volcano. It just didn't come across the way I wanted in the original, so I played, which is my second favorite thing to do (the first being taking pictures in the first place). :)

The original is nice.. but with your photoshop kung fu you've given the image a new dimension that absolutely works! It's got that fine art feel that is so hard to achieve. Bravo!
