cherlyn 1 Posted September 6, 2006 Riverlife is a common scene in Vietnam, you can see the Vietnamese rowing their Sampans across river, some even make these boats their home. Landrum ever ask me what this fragile boats are called. They are called Sampans. A Sampan is a relatively flat bottomed Chinese wooden boat from twelve to fifteen feet long. Some sampans include a small shelter on board, and may be used as a permanent habitation on inland waters. Sampans are generally used for fishing or transportation, in coastal areas or rivers. It is unusual for a sampan to sail far from land as they do not have the means to survive rough weather. The term sampan literally means three planks in Cantonese language, it is derived from the words Sam (three) and pan (plank).Sampans are still in use by rural residents of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.Sampans may be propelled by oars or may be fitted with outboard motors. blackdogstudio 1 Posted September 8, 2006 Love the composition and colours here Cherlyn, particularly the yellow house. Incredible how the smoke/haze has served as an elegant form of Gaussian Blur. The sole figure in the foreground gives us a great sense of scale! Regards, Kelvin. Link to comment
