barclayphoto 0 Posted August 29, 2006 Here is the image I used to create the Panoramic Image posted previously. I'll let you decide if the foreground is usable or not. I choose to eliminate the foreground and crop to a Pan... I felt it was stronger that this original capture. Link to comment

Guest Guest Posted August 29, 2006 this is beautifully done, marvellous light, and a very impressive sky. Link to comment
robidooo 0 Posted August 29, 2006 I like this one better. To me, there is more depth in this one. The foreground give a better perspective. I like a lot the clarity of this photo. The details present in the mountain in the back are impressive. Nice work. Link to comment
gdanmitchell 0 Posted August 29, 2006 I like the sagebrush country and dirt/gravel roads of the eastern Sierra and Owens Valley. I used to always try to avoid getting the roads in my photo, as I was aiming for more "natural" images. However, over time, I've started to find the roads themselves to be interesting. The warm side light on the road and foreground is beautiful - but I'm not certain that it works completely as a full image. A few thoughts: - I wonder what it would look like with a 5:4 ratio crop - e.g. landscape 8x10 format? This would let you keep most of that wonderful sky. - Can't easily re-do it now (unless you live in Owens Valley and are willing to wait... ;-) but a slightly wider angle lens and either a lower camera position or possibly pointing down a bit might have worked, too. In any case, I'm jealous of that lovely light and those spectacular clouds. Take care, Dan Link to comment
barclayphoto 0 Posted August 29, 2006 Thank you for taking the time to write a constructive and thoughtful critque. All excellent ideas. I'll be back out west in February again. Can't wait! Link to comment
phil morgan 0 Posted August 30, 2006 Jon The crop was great, but I seem to be in the minority prefering this one. I like the way the road leads you into the mountains and sky. What a sky by the way! I have never seen one like that in the UK ever! To my eyes there is nothing to comment on here, great composition DOF and exposure control. Congratulations. Link to comment
roberto gara 0 Posted August 30, 2006 I also prefer this version. Wonderful picture! Superb light and blend of earth and sky! Link to comment
tom grubbe 0 Posted August 31, 2006 The sky is emphasized more here than in the pano shot which makes this much more dramatic. I vote for this one also. Link to comment
kahkityoong 0 Posted August 31, 2006 I think the foreground works very well. The extra depth and leading line of the road makes it a much more effective composition IMO. The light on the vegetation would also be a shame to crop out. Link to comment
contessa 0 Posted August 31, 2006 Gorgeous photo. For those of us that are aware that these mountains are not in the STATE of Alabama, what state are they in? Wish I was riding my horse down that road! Link to comment
barclayphoto 0 Posted September 1, 2006 The Alabama Hills are in Lone Pine California. This is an area that Ansel Adams spent a lot of time in. Many old Western Movies were filmed in these hills. In fact the main dirt road that cuts through is called Movie road. A very special place indeed. Link to comment
thierrylaflamme 0 Posted September 3, 2006 I am sure, John, that you felt something very special when your feet touched that land. It is sincerely amazing the way these clouds were moving in the sky. B e a u t i f u l ! Thank you, also, for one of the nicest feedback that I got on my web-page regarding the picture called: "Toronto centre-ville". I'm really happy to know you liked it because, to me, it means a lot. (Deep inside, I think it is one of my strongest work among all pictures from the last 10 years...) Thank you one thousand times; your comment was touching. Link to comment
