Nikon D200, Nikkor 70~200 f 2.8 @ 125 mm iso 1600, some sharpening and contrast adjustment, not amounting to 'manipulation' under the rules, as I read them.

The caption describes the predicament for this 'rodeo cowboy' or as

they call it now, a 'cowboy bullfighter' but without the traditional

Spanish picadors, sword, etc.. The bull has a clear shot at the

cowboy, the cowboy has only his wiles, and he doesn't seem to be

doing so well here!!!. Your ratings and critiques are invited and

most welcome. If you rate harshly or very critically, please submit

a helpful and constructive comment/Please share your superior

Actually, he was thrown, but not gored. I have photos of that, but he went out of the frame.

One good reason for shooting with plenty of space around the action in rodeo photos is the possibility a cowboy may be boosted into space as this guy was. He was able to walk away, however (run would be a better word).

It's heartbreaking to look at a series of photos, as I did with this series, to find that this is a good enough photo and to see the next photo in the series is this guys lower body hanging from space, the top part out of frame, with the bull's head underneath, where the bull hit the cowpoke. It would have made a great photo, except I didn't 'back off' enough and leave room for the possibility the cowpoke might be thrown 'out of frame'.

I'm a 'crop-in-the-viewfinder' kind of guy, but for rodeo, I'll have to 'shoot large' in the future and crop the action from those photos, to ensure that doesn't happen to me again.

And, I've decided, I'm going to get press credentials and go to more rodeos, as time permits. And next time to get 'chute credentials' to sit atop the chutes where the cowboys riding bulls and broncos go out.
