barclayphoto 0 Posted August 27, 2006 I've cropped a traditional 35mm shot as the foreground was not adding much to the composition. Being a serious XPan shooter this felt very natural to do.. Thoughts? Link to comment

marionovak 0 Posted August 27, 2006 Very good, very dynamic, your crop is Ok, foreground wouldn't add anything, it would take away from the shot Link to comment
sawicki 0 Posted August 28, 2006 Very good image. Lovely perspective and sky. And the landscape is breath-taking. Great. Link to comment
darius.tulbure 0 Posted August 28, 2006 Isn`t a little "too cropped"? I would like to see I think 10% of the cropped part. However, I think the best thing to do when you`ll gonna shoot something like this again, is to do it from the groung level, especially if there aren`t too much high weeds going on. Anyways, this is still a good shot. First I thought was a panoramic one :) Link to comment
leighperry 0 Posted August 28, 2006 That's a spectacular sky and fine light. I do feel the proportions would be helped by including a bit more at the bottom of the frame, though. Link to comment
barclayphoto 0 Posted August 28, 2006 Leigh and Darius... Thanks for the constructive feedback. For what it's worth.. I do shoot with the XPan a lot and so I made the proportions of the crop the same as it. I could add more in the bottom but there are some distractions I had to make a choice with... None the less I feel your critiques are valid and apprecaited. Link to comment
tranhuy 0 Posted August 28, 2006 Very beautiful photo. Great lighting and wonderful sky. Best regards. Link to comment
tmjacobs 0 Posted August 28, 2006 I agree with Darius & Leigh: I think it is cropped just a bit too much. The whole landscape is now too close to the lower edge. Splendid photo nonetheless with a beautiful sky. Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted August 29, 2006 Gorgeous shot! This is not the Poconos!! :-) I need to learn to do stuff like this with my 10-22mm. Link to comment
_jackie 0 Posted August 29, 2006 John, I've always been a fan of your Xpan work. So glad to see panoramic-type shots making an appearance in your digital portfolio! Your vision certainly hasn't suffered from your move to the digital "dark side." I like this crop. The stunning clouds deserve the focus. If there are foreground distractions in the original, I think you were right to crop them out. Link to comment
kensimm 0 Posted August 29, 2006 I agree with the general consensus John. Crop is just right as is light, colour. As usual spot on. The sky gives the shot a real three dimensional quality. This is atmospheric perspective at its best. Regards Ken. Link to comment
ianflindt 0 Posted August 29, 2006 Stupendously good - the light, clarity and detail are flawless features, while the cloud patterns and position of the mountain range couldn't be bettered. Outstanding. Link to comment
daverave 1 Posted August 29, 2006 Very nice; the sky and mountains are beautiful and sharp. I tend to agree that a little more foreground would be a plus. It is, after all, titled "Alabama Hills" and part of what makes the scenery there is the "weeds". I'm not one of those purists that thinks that cropping has to comply with some magic ratio. jimg 0 Posted August 30, 2006 The sky and the crop work together perfectly. The snowy mountains really add a nice dramatic flare to the image. I'm envious. Beautiful photo! Link to comment
gdanmitchell 0 Posted August 30, 2006 Interesting to watch you play with cropping of this image - I saw and commented on your earlier image. This does work, though I think I would also like to see a bit more of the foreground. Take care, Dan Link to comment
