For the sake of clouds

jh de beer

I've set myself a target one day after work - I had to take 4 decent photos in a 100 meter radius - of whatever I could find within half an hour. Call it extreme photosports. This is number 4.

OK Boetie - dis nou amptelik. Jy kan goeie fotos neem..........

I'm rating this photo 7/7, not because the bloke that took this one is my brother, but because when I panned down the critique list, this one caught my eye out of hundreds of other photos. Only then I saw who the photographer was ........ Man those clouds are beautiful......, the angle on the lamp is just right. Congratulations JH!

Would you have taken it if you hadn't set the challenge?

Top job really stands out. The clouds destroy your sense of scale I assume that's streetlight height but it's difficult to tell Fantastic composition, from the thumb I thought it was part of a racing catamaran just dipping into the sea

Cheers Ian

Thank you all for the wonderful feedback. It just shows you - great images are all around us. I appreciate the time you took to to view and comment on one of my photos.

Maria, I'm not a great fan of heavily PS'ed images. This image is straight from the camera. As they say: "as is". I adjusted the brightness and contrast a little bit as you have to with most digital images.

Ian, I suppose I would have as the clouds were perfect and beautiful. I was running around franticly searching for something, anything, to place before the clouds - as I thought a straight shot of the clouds only wouldn't have the same impact.

Arnold, thanks ouboet - your support means very much to me, on different levels. I truly appreciate it.

In general, it is indeed the clouds and the onconventional viewpoint of the streetlamp that catches the eye. I literally lied on my back, with the camera pointed upwards along the street pole, as close as possible to the pole for this composition.

I'm still amazed, that clouds and a simple street lamp, can be a decent photo, and even evoke some emotion and excitement within people.

The art of photography will never cease to captivate me. Regards. - JH -

Nice job of turning a mundane object and scene into something special. I'm generally not a fan of the "use a funny angle to get attention" approach, but this is very effective and successfully abstracts the elements of the image.

Great work.

Good thinking in excellent light & under beautiful skies. Could be jpeg artefacts, but I detect some grey markings bottom left? The exposure is really exceptional; I believe this image shows a meeting of good technique and fertile imagination, under which conditions darkroom manipulation is rendered unnecessary : i.e. the artist photographer manipulates the vista before him to suit his vision. Well done.

Dan, thank you for your comment. Looking at your portfolio, it makes it even more special to me.

Seven, I really appreciate the insightful comment you gave this image. It is comments like yours that keep the wheels rolling. It is truly appreciated.

With regards to the grey marks at the bottom, left... aaaaagh, that was the result of my first and very unsuccessful attempt at cleaning my sensor. I got some moist on it and smeared it with a brush. I am highly disgusted by the markings, and wish there was some way to make it disappear.

PS: Subsequently, and after studying some tips by Mr Atkinson, I performed "open heart surgery" on my sensor, and I'm glad to report that Nikonson is doing very well and his sensor is as clean as a clean slate.

Regards

JH, I am also a graduate of The Atkins school of sensor surgery, it's a basic approach that works.

Very unique and interesting perspective, JH. I like how the angle of the of the clouds is similar to the angle of the post and how the bulb itself makes itself the central point of interest by being a circle instead of lines.

Groete. JH

This is a nice shot. I liked your description of frantically looking for something to get in the frame besides clouds, and this object was a good choice. The structure of the streetlamp, with its clearly defined edges is fantastic against the smeared appearance of the clouds. This almost reminds me of an illustration for a children's book. The lamp part looks like a pendulum.
