Photography versus Painting

Taken at a wet paint auction. The artist's eyes with a paint brush

are far more idealistic than a photographer's eye. Didn't have much

time to compose as I didn't want to make her self conscious. If I

did it again I would step back to include her feet and all her tools

and paints. I could then crop if I didn't like, but this is the full

frame. Comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Got me thinking, John. Her composition is of the tree and house, so it might have been interesting to frame your composition exactly as hers by, as you say, step back or zoom out.

I agree that would be the better photo. Several times this day I wished that I had brought a wider angle lens. I was also up against a very grey/hazy sky. Right or wrong, the first thing I do on a grey day is frame my photos to keep the sky out.

Know what you mean. I carry two lenses and hate it. The 18-200 from Nikon or third party is probably the solution. Yup, there's no probblem that can't be solved by keep throwing money at it!

 

I love gray overcast days: the world's biggesst softbox, and with a little fill here and there does the job for me.

 

I'm not so sure I like the painter's composition. Everything looks too crammed along the upper 2/3. Maybe she was trying to avoid the sky too. :-)

See, I was just trying to improve her composition with mine!

 

Actually, this is an annual event with around twenty artists all vying for unique perpectives of this estate. As I photographed this she was busy filling in the field with wild flowers, so it will seem less empty. Closer to the house there were artists stacked on top of each other plying their craft.
