Ok, you were probably limited by the focal length, but the trick with these photos is really in the eyes - to show the concentration and focus. About everything else bar the eyes and the helmet is no-motif. I don't know if you used a fill-in flash, but usually it's a bonus - gives more light to the eyes and at best forms catch lights. I drafted my idea here with Photoshop. The tricks in general are:

- Large aperture for short dof

- post control of contrast, saturation and unsharp mask.
