Stunning; simply beautiful. I prefer this to what seems to me the other more processed version; the colors here are more natural.

A superb, elegant, intense portrait. I love how Ivet pops out of the green ...

Really excellent.

I am awestruck at the elegance and subtle beauty of this picture. You did a wonderful job with the lighting and the eyes. Keep up the great work.

This is a brilliant photo in almost every aspect. If this was a painting it would have easily been something hopper, homer or sargent could have come up with. Fantastic post-processing work.

You have done a wonderful job of capturing this lovely young girl's portrait. Lighting is great as is the color. Quite a beauty! Thanks for sharing with us. -Durr

This image has been selected for discussion. It is not necessarily the "best" picture the Elves have seen this week, nor is it a contest. It is simply an image that the Elves found interesting and worthy of discussion. Discussion of photo.net policy, including the choice of Photograph of the Week should not take place here, but in the Site Feedback forum.

Before writing a contribution to this thread, please consider our reason for having this forum. We have this forum because future visitors might be interested in learning more about the pictures. They browsed the gallery, found a few striking images and want to know things like why is it a good picture, why does it work? Or, indeed, why doesn't it work, or how could it be improved?

So, when contributing to this thread, please keep the above in mind. Address the strengths, the shortcomings of the image. It's not good enough to like it, you should spend some time trying to put into words why that is the case. Equally so if you don't like it, or if you can't quite make up your mind.

Let's make sure this forum is a wonderful learning resource for future photographers!

Thank you and enjoy!

One of my favourites ever here, wow! It has such a painterly style that I can't help imagine the artist who created it as much as the subject within the image itself...this is very much a personal journey. I am fascinated by the manipulations involved in the face...the Egyptian-style eyes and all the other little nuances...

Well, actually I can't think of any discussion about this photo. This girl has a very special beauty, I think that's the main reason for liking this photo. The rest is the good composition and the beautiful color combination.

Complimentary toning for the eyes and background/foreground really works well IMO. It simplifies the image in the same way as a BW image enabling the viewer to concentrate on the subject.

Fantastic natural pose with strong lines from the arms complete the picture.

Tone looks to be taken from the eye colour and applied to back/foreground and I'm not sure if this makes me think there are areas around the arms where this can be seen.... either way stunning image.

I agree with those that see this POW as a very beautiful portrait of a young girl. She has the attributes of her age with the hair blown by the wind, her finger ring, and her attitude of something in between annoyed by the photographer and proud of the attention. Altogether an attractive portrait of a beautiful girl.

This being said, these positive aspects do not make the photo into a piece of art and I don't think it was attented by Tanya. I could not see any painter like Hopper (as mentioned above)doing such a portrait. Such artist add a second dimension to their work, with, in the case of Hopper, women looking into the emptiness adding an existentialistic dimension to most of his works. This photo is straight forward and merely, in my eyes, present the girl in a very favourable light, but does not intend to communicate much else.

As concerns the composition of the scene I find the green colour tones of the background corresponding to the colour of her eyes very well done, but I'm not sure I would have chosen to "cut" her head by the upper limit of a fairly un-attractive metal (?) structure.

The POW is however still a very good portrait of a very beautiful girl. Congratulations to Tanya.

This is another of Tanya's portraits worthy of note. She has others photographed with this same skill and sensitivity. The somber penetrating eyes just "grab" the viewer and hold ones attention.

The subject is just enough off center not to look posed that way, but not centered enough so that it looks as if that's what the photographer desired. (I don't know if that was understandable as stated, but it's a good comment.)

The tedium of the greens of the background, which by the way, match well with the object the subject is leaning on, is nicely broken up by the young lady's presence.

If I have a negative comment, it is that the young lady's left elbow is too near the bottom of the picture, and foreshortening of the left arm looks a bit awkward -- almost like she's deformed. Not really bad, but it did catch my eye.

But what really catches my eye, is the somber look -- those arresting eyes! Nicely done.

The pose, lighting, facial expression are all wonderfully captured. I consider the post-capture processing on her face, especially her eyes, to be overdone. Her face does not match the rest of the image. Nonetheless, this is a beautiful image that creates great interest in wondering what she is thinking.

For me, looking at portraits is always difficult. The person photographed is someone I

don't know, shot with some preconceived notion, either the photographer's or the

subjects, as to what a portrait should look like and then, somehow, I am supposed to care.

But then there are those times where it goes beyond a portrait and is a window into

another world and that is what I see here. Art? I think so. Why, because this lifts me up

and makes me feel something, it speaks to youth, to possiblities and to basic humanity.

As to the basic photo itself, it is beautifully designed. Complimentary colors of skin and

background, warm with nice contrast, a beautiful use of triangle in the arm and repeated

with arms and head--my eyes are stuck on her eyes as they rivet me in place.

Looking through the portfolio I found several other examples of this ability to capture

those moments between ours or the subjects artiface and I think the next logical step is

for this artist to let go of safe and predictable and DO THIS!

This picture reminds me of something rather obvious - final result as balance between skills of photographer and choice of model... I'd rather see a bit less postprocessing (as Robert said), but maybe the "straight" image would not attract so much attention.

Oh, can you also see very delicate greenish cast on model's hair? Or is it my monitor?

This portrait boils down to three things for me: First, the the girl is beautiful. Second, the foreground and background complement the colour of the girl's eyes. Third, Tanya was savvy and competent enough to recognize the opportunity presented and take advantage of it. A very nice portrait indeed.
