El martin pescador vive con su pareja, pero no es sociable con sus congeneres, hace nidos subterraneos y pone huevos blancos. Construye su nido generalmente en terreno arenoso, a orilla de un rio. Excava con su pico un tunel con una entrada extremadamente estrecha. En la parte final realiza un amplio compartimento donde construye el nido, el que forma con las espinas de los peces, que una vez que ha comido, desembucha, despues de digerir las partes blandas.
