DISCLAIMER: I do NOT agree with anything that this group represents!! (See image below.) In fact, when I looked at their website I realized exactly WHY they are being escorted by the police - for their own safety.

PHOTOGRPHICALLY: I was riding the top of a double decker bus and drove past this demonstration. We were going slowly enough that I was able to take several shots. It was around the time of the London subway bombings (last July, 2005), so I thought it had something to do with that (I was wrong). Anyway ... I like the color of the coats worn by the police against the colors in the British flag.

Please comment only on the photo and not on the politics. Thank you.

This was the banner that they were carrying at the front of their march. I could only read it after I got home and blew the picture up in photoshop...

Forgetting the politics, Lou Ann, the colors are absolutely stupendous on this one.

It is easier to put Leni Riefenstahl in perspective as an artist when one sees this.

Great contrast of colors. The red and blue on top and the yellow at the bottom divide the photo into two halfs. Well picked, Uwe.

Hey, Lannie - will you clarify that statement a little more? I know who Leni Riefenstahl was ... but how does this put her in perspective as an artist?

Well, Lou Ann, I don't want to endorse Riefenstahl, but when I see this, I can see how one could get entranced by the beauty of symbols that themselves represent some very ugly things--and even uglier ideas. This is fine work, Lou Ann, and since we know that your heart is in the right place, we can all enjoy the beauty of the picture in good conscience. I think that this is one of your very best captures of all time.

Ahhhhhh!!! I got it! Thanks for clarifying, Lannie. After your comment, I went and read a lot about her. I was repulsed. I don't care how gorgeous her photos of those people were ... the ends will never justify her means. I'm glad that ya'll know me well enough to know. In fact, I used my long lens for this. When I shot, I didn't realize that there was anyone other than the police in this group....

Lou Ann - I'm completely ignorant of the politics going on in the photo, however, I do love the photo. Sharp and clear with brilliant colors; the contrast between the flags and the police jackets is fantastic. Very well done.

No denying the colors are great on this one. If one didn't know the politics (like me), one would just think it was some sort of patriotic march, or a great parade. Outstanding capture.

Best Regards

Lou Ann, I know that you don't want to get into the politics here, but could you at least identify this group and its website? I get paid to be up-to-date on things like this, sick though they may be, and I still don't have any idea who this group is or what it stands for--although I am assuming that it is some sort of neo-nazi or other ethnic/racial purity kind of group.

Thanks.

Lannie - all that you mentioned. Take a look at the attachment in my comment above. Their name and website are listed there. If you can't make it out, send me an e-mail and I'll e-mail you. I don't want to have their name or website in the text of the thread. Thanks!

Ah, I see it now, Lou Ann. I just visited their site. They're nasty, alright.

I was one of those who just saw the pretty colors the first time I looked. The color contrast is still quite striking.

For what it's worth, you could probably sell this one to one of the London media outlets.

Lou Ann, Lannie, they look like a far right bunch to me. This section of the political spectrum have a habit of using the national flag as a political symbol with a nationalist (i.e. nazi) message. This makes other people a little wary of using it. It was good in the recent FIFa world cup to see the English flag flying everywhere in support of the national team without any sense of a political message. It helps reclaim it for the rest of us. The heavy police presence here shows they were expecting trouble.
