david_cassidy2 0 Posted June 11, 2006 I took this in Northern Ontario about seven years ago. I appreciate any comments or critiques. Thank you. Link to comment
gwasshappa 0 Posted June 11, 2006 Cool shot. The trees are so still. This took some time to set up and it turned out perfect. Link to comment
rocco1 0 Posted June 11, 2006 Absolutely fantastic! How do you know exactly where that turning spot is? Or is that an astronomy secret? Link to comment
david_cassidy2 0 Posted June 11, 2006 Thanks for your comments. The "trick" to this is finding Polaris and carefully centering it in your image. Any slight deviation from the center will move the arcs at a slight angle from the middle of the frame. Using a wide-angle lens such as this makes it even more difficult as even *seeing* Polaris is quite difficult given its magnitude (star brightness). I believe this is about a 25-minute exposure under extremely dark skies far removed from light pollution. I remember the night fondly, it was one of the stillest, clearest skies I'd ever seen in my life, something so few of us have had the awesome pleasure of experiencing. :) -David Link to comment
rocco1 0 Posted June 11, 2006 Polaris? North Star? Oh how lucky you from the northern hemisphere are. We from the southern hemisphere have no such star to guide us... Oh well, back to the drawing board. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted June 11, 2006 Very abstract look to this. One of the better ones I've seen! Link to comment
david_cassidy2 0 Posted June 11, 2006 Unfortunately for southern hemisphere sky-watchers, there is no polar star that is close to the celestial pole. However, you can locate Sigma Octantis and go from there as that is fairly close to the south celestial pole. -David :) Link to comment

alexconu 0 Posted June 12, 2006 Nice image. I would have probably worked a little bit at composition, but still a nice image. I don't like to put Polaris dead center :) Link to comment
halina_lewandowski 0 Posted June 17, 2006 Fantastic image. Best regards. Unfortunately I can not rate this photo higher than 6 at this time. I'll be back on that. Link to comment

david_cassidy2 0 Posted June 18, 2006 Thank you so much for your kind words. It's really a nice feeling when so many appreciate shots like this. The heavens are filled with so many wonders and I find it so calming to just look up at the stars. I'm an avid amateur astronomer and to share this with others is always a pleasure. I'm so glad you all liked it. -David Link to comment
