Veterans Memorial Bridge (Formerly known as the Detroit-Superior Viaduct)

When the Detroit-Superior Viaduct open on Thanksgiving Day in 1917, it was celebrated as the world's largest concrete double-deck bridge. The 3,112-foot long structure originally carried four lanes of automobile traffic on the upper deck. Four streetcars were carried on the lower deck, which opened on Christmas Day 1917. Today the lower level is only used for storage of maintenance equipment. The total cost of the construction was $5,398,000.00. It is the centerpiece of the Cleveland downtown bridges. In the mid-1990s this bridge was overhauled, partly in preparation for Cleveland's Bicentennial celebration. As part of the overhaul, the bridge is now bathed in blue light at night.
