j_m_lee_photography 0 Posted May 29, 2006 David, very intersting perspective. In the midst of the messy enviroment you've create some color to it. :) BEST REGARDS Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted May 29, 2006 some of the highlight values feel a little pasty, but that's a pretty good use of selective color! Link to comment
dan_cr 0 Posted May 29, 2006 I think I know what you are going for with this. I think you are trying to contrast the modern hight tech buildings with the laundry drying on a clothsline (low tech). : ) I don't think I see any pretty ladies in this shot... Anyway, I don't care for this manipulation. First off, the highlights in the buildings are a little much. I agree they have a "pasty" look. Second, the color on the clothing looks way oversaturated to point of being tacky. Cheers! Link to comment
davidmccracken 2 Posted May 30, 2006 Spencer, Thanks. The colour was there all along. I just made it stand out. Doug, You have a point about the buildings being 'pasty.' This is not how it was printed. For reasons I can't remember I did up the contrast before uploading it. The print looks fine. Daniel, May I say your tone is a little different to what it is normally. I would have thought that someone who has been to Hong Kong would have realised the simplicity of what I was trying to do here. OK, the buildings are pasty. Yes the colours are oversaturated. That, at least was deliberate. You say you don't care for the image. That is fine although I think you could have worded your thoughts a little better. Since you have been kind enough to leave a comment I will state my intent with this shot since you seem to have missed it completely. The classic image of Hong Kong is of laundry being hung out of windows on poles. You see none of that here. Furthermore, it is very rare to see laundry hanging in this fashion anywhere in Hong Kong. This is quite a rare site and I used the selective colour to highlight it. I felt I succeeded. addendum - In view of the comments above I have resubmitted this image without the boost in contrast although those that have already visited this page will probably still see the old image. owen_omeara 1 Posted May 31, 2006 As you know, I am not usually a fan of the use of added color in black and white images but in this case it nails it. Without the color it might be a decent image of the city but here color makes it far more. I especially like the low position of the laundry. In short, I like it a great deal. -Owen Link to comment
davidmccracken 2 Posted May 31, 2006 Owen, I have to agree with you. Believe it or not, I had a funny feeling you would like it even with the added colour. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted September 18, 2006 Thank you for commenting on my portfolio. I've left you a message on the image that you commented on. I like this idea (your picture here). You're right. It is a different twist on the touch of color thing, but I'm not sure it has been done any better aesthetically. The clothes have been so over-saturated that they look a bit cartoonish. Great idea, though. Sorry! I don't really know what is going on there but I hope you see what I mean. Really! It's quite good but I do feel you can do better. Link to comment
davidmccracken 2 Posted September 18, 2006 Rachel, the colours are over saturated. It was a very concious decision for me. If you think your image is just as aesthetic as this, good luck to you as you obviously don't need the feedback from others. Link to comment
