k5083 1 Posted May 16, 2006 Hmm. Well, first of all, this is a photo that I might have taken, and if I took it, I wouldn't throw it out. It's worthwhile in that sense. But, it wouldn't go in my greatest hits file. So, why not. Technically it's fine, good exposure, good depth of field. Only problem is that burned out highlight which draws the eye and also screams DIGITAL! The converging lines and the curved seam in the wing fillet are nice. I guess maybe the flaw is not enough action in the side of the fuselage. If the light had been such as to cast a highlight down the side, or if this were a highly polished airplane to give you some nice reflections, then maybe it would work. More practically, maybe you could think about dodging and burning to differentiate the tone of the fuselage from that of the sky. If the fuselage were a good deal lighter than the sky, you might have more drama. It would also compete better with that highlight. Also I wonder what you were trying to say here about the shape of the Mustang. I'm not certain what feature of the airplane you are trying to draw attention to here or what you want us to notice about it. There doesn't have to be an answer to this question to make a good picture, but there usually is one for great pictures. Link to comment
dangoldman 0 Posted May 16, 2006 Thank you once again for writing writing up a very helpful critique. I agree with you that it is not a shot i would put in the 'greatest' folder. To be truthful, i took a similar photo last year with a junk camera, and really wanted to duplicate it with something that takes a good shot this year. I actually fear that had the airplane been shiny, there might have been even more blow highlights? There were definetly shiny mustang's there at lakeland, its just that it was hard to keep distractions out of the photo. Like one mustang had the port on the wing open. That plane had an awesome semi camo paint job which contrasted against a really shiny skin. I was really tempted to flip that thing shut. I remember while at the show i had taken a few experimental shots playing with depth of field from the front corner to bring out the massive length of the nose, engine, that the 51 has. Perhaps i was trying that again here, but i dont remember anymore... Link to comment
emjordan 0 Posted August 5, 2006 The shiney thing yes is difficult to not have on a Mustang. That was my problem in capturing a polished Mustang earlier this year. Only a few made it into my portfolio. There are always more planes to take pictures of and try, try again in getting the right shot we want. overall, I like this because it feels like it is off the ground and in the sky. elisabeth ;) Link to comment
