salvatore.mele 1 Posted May 12, 2006 That's almost an abstract picture, with all these lines and curves. Comments and criticism on this (and on any of my other sail shots into the same folder) are warmly appreciated (and will be exchanged!) Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted May 13, 2006 Salvatore, OK, you've shown us what you can do from the deck, now lets see a shot taken from the other end of the mast:-) Best, LM. Link to comment
salvatore.mele 1 Posted May 13, 2006 Len, been there done that: you might want to check this shot or this other one! Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted May 13, 2006 Salvatore, You baited me! You knew someone was going to make that observation & you just waited in ambush:-) Well, back to this one: Beautiful exposure on the sail which usually tends to burn out. Correspondingly, the sky then becomes the deep rich blue you show here. The contrast between the two is exciting. Very good composition with the spaces unequally (a superior choice) but interestingly divided. Seams in the sail and the rigging lines further break down the expanses of white dividing them again into a variety of interesting shapes. An excellent and successful geometric exercise. The other shots you refer to are excellent in their own category & it would be unfair to compare this one with those for content & human interest. Kudos to you for ascending to the 'Crow's Nest' & not being 'Chicken'. Best, LM. Link to comment

leighperry 0 Posted May 14, 2006 This is beautifully observed Salvatore. I am very impressed at the number of strong images you have been able to drag out of mast and sails! The proportions here are superb and the dynamic balance is excellent. The only thought I can offer relates to the colour rendering of the sky. You could move it towards a different hue of blue, but then the current colour scheme also gives a pleasing surreal effect. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted May 15, 2006 Salvatore, I think this is my favorite of your sail series so far. The composition is terrific and the exposure is perfect. What I love most about this image is the the way it plays graphically with the eye. There's a push and pull between the sails and the sky. At one glance, the sails seem to be foreground, and then, somehow, the sky takes it's place. Adding further to this phenomenon is the quality of the sky. Is it the sky or a frothy surf? salvatore.mele 1 Posted May 16, 2006 Len, there is even something gotten while hanging below the boom. I like your analysis of this shot and, indeed, backlit sail are a ceaseless source of amazement. If you like this one, there is another interpretation here.Julio, muchisimas gracias por tu comentario(s)Leigh, thanks! I am particularly impressed by your comments, since I admire the way you can arrange elements in your compositions. As for the blue of the sky, I guess it got some greenish hue, here, but not too much more than it used to be. I am having troubles in getting the web image reproduce what I get on (one of) the six or so machines I am used, with 4 or so different operative systems.Laurie, thanks. It is curious that I never really liked this shot, and it sat for a year in my files before resurfacing last week. As for the sky, it is the sky... I fear there is no way I can arrange this shot as a reflection, with the deck in the way, but I will try to think of it. Or did you hint to the white clouds being streaks of foam... If we were flying so much canvas amidst streaks of foam I guess this picture would never have been posted. Link to comment

giuseppe_miriello1 0 Posted August 4, 2006 Hi Salvatore... it is strange you didnt like the image, it is very well realized, but probably you are over-exigent with yourself (well not to like this one you are well above the normal amateur self-exigence).... there are several strong geometric patterns going in there, mostly triangles but while only one is straight lined, all the othres are curved and distorted, very pleasant... also the alternance of blue sky between the sails is very nice. To me this is an image i would like to have in my portfolio... i also understand you have made *many* great looking images, and probably that is the reason you missed this one at first... regards. g.
