neilpeters 0 Posted February 21, 2007 Hi Dhruba. I'm honored at your interest in the dying art of hand-coloring. This was once very common in the 1940's-60's. An internet search of (hand coloring photographs, how to) will pop up many sites. Basically, this is a film image, printed in the darkroom on fiber matte paper. Covered with a layer of Marshall's P.M. solution (turpentine and oil) and then colored with translucent pencils and/or oils. The pencils melt in the turpentine and become oils, spread with 100% cotton balls and q-tips. For pencils, I use Berol and Marshalls. For oils, Winton, Grumbacher and Marshall's (any translucent will do). Drying time is 1-3 days. The difference is colors you cannot get with any other method, you can make up your own colors. And, its very fun to do. Link to comment
