I love these guys and the Montery Bay Aquarium is a great place to shoot. IMHO you are missing some sharpness here. There is quite a bit of noise in your blue background and none of these little guys are crisply in focus. This could be due to a less than adequate scan or other things that would require more info.; like shutter speed and f stop that are not included in your details.

 

I've shot a couple hundred myself here. I'm still searching for a keeper.

Thanks, Drew - For sure the sharpness is not happening in this shot. I'm pretty sure it was shot at 1/30 or 1/60 at 2.8. The grain and blur reminded me of one of those French advertising posters or a painting, almost. It was an odd accident. Shots on both sides of it were pretty sharp, for hand-held. I used this same lens not long after this for some amateur wedding protraits and the barrel slop ruined several shots, but I wonder if it may have helped make this shot. I also have yet to get "the shot" down there, which I too think will be bright and tack sharp. Until then, I keep coming back to this one...Thanks once again for your thoughts!
