atkphotoworks 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Quite an interesting piece Kim. It's not exactly a burning cross that one associates with a Klan rally and I don't think that it's intended to be a neo-artistic take on such events. It does conjure up some sort of apocolyptic event - a la fire and brimstone. The cross looks wounded but not vanquished, something along those lines... Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Actually, the concept behind this one was the recent church burnings in Alabama. Kind of symbolism for someone trying to destroy religion or perhaps the destruction that can be caused by fighting for religion. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Well, my husband looked at this one and immediately thought Klan, so you're not that far off. He doesn't like it at all, btw. :) Link to comment
atkphotoworks 0 Posted April 8, 2006 I actually do like it btw. It's very a powerful dark and grisly image. Sometimes it's an area worth exploring. Last year I did some work with layering where I used some self portraits to explore some grisly topics. They should still be up in my p'folio and my wife didn't much like them either. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted April 8, 2006 I checked them out, Amar. I guess our spouses don't like us exploring the "dark side", but it's interesting to change it up once in awhile. Link to comment
flyfisher159 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Kim , can you take this image and put a faint horrified looking face in the cross? Stephen Love the image!!! Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted April 9, 2006 I'm not sure what "spin" I'd put on it, but it's awesome! I keep staring at it; it's quite beautiful! Please don't put a face in that cross, though. Link to comment
alecee 0 Posted April 9, 2006 Hmmmm....A very controversial image indeed. The 3 composite works well here. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted April 9, 2006 Kim, I think the result is interesting and very dramatic in its composition, colors and significance. of course each one will find its own thoughts connected to it, for me it talks of religion in general even the cross is present, but many atrocitis is, were, and are still done with God's name attached to them ( see Ireland, Holocaust, crusade wars in history... and so many more). Thought provoking image. Pnina Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted April 9, 2006 I think certain photos (or compilation of photos, in this case) can cause us each to react differently to it, depending on our backgrounds. I always find it interesting to post one of these every once in awhile. Link to comment
jayme 0 Posted April 11, 2006 Sorry I missed this one earlier :( First, I love the color, the composition & the reflective effect on the cross, adds real depth. Now for the symbolism :) The "Cross" is synonymous with many things, like Religion, Hope, Faith, etc. The "Fire" synonymous with many things, like destruction, anger, hatred, rebirth, death, etc. Obviously this one could have many different messages. I like your personal message re: the recent church burnings. But, this one could be used to symbolize the "death of religion" as we understand it today. I just watched the "Book of Judas" on the National Geographic channel. I immediately associated this image with the changes this discovery could make to organized Christianity as we know it. The cross does not appear to be burning only reflecting the fire, thus "change", not destruction. I like this very much :) Leaves a lot to the imagination! Link to comment
