cherlyn 1 Posted April 4, 2006 It looks so much like a human being, sitting on the branch that I was amazed. Some interesing information of Proboscis Monkey :Proboscis Monkies are endangered because of hunting & habitat destruction. Their habitat shrinks because of land reclamation &intensive felling of mangrove trees for fire & charcoal. Tolook for food, the monkies need to travel up to 2km/day. They make acrobatic leaps from one tree to another & sometimes into the water. Their webbed feet enabled them to swim well & towalk on mangrove without sinking. Their enlarge stomachs contain bacteria which break down the celluose &deactivate the poisons in the leaves they eat. They have toavoid fruit. Eating fruit causes a sudden build up of gas & acidwhich results in bloating that kills them. They live in harems, usually one male with 8 females & their offspring.Once independant, the young males leave to form all-male groups of up to 2 large males & 10 small ones. This looks like aharem & young males cling to older ones as they would to their mother, further strengthening the harem idea.
