This kind of heavy contrast is interesting, adds 'texture' to the shot, but whiteness of the chain is a little bit hard. I'm wondering why you cut off the trash can edge...

First, technical comments: The contrasty B&W treatment here works very well. There are a few too many stopped-up shadow areas, I think. But the woman's face and clothes look very good, and that's what the viewer's eye will attend to. I think you could probably burn in the white chain a bit, and perhaps also the white bag in the trash can and the white wall or pavement (?) in the background. Perhaps using a mask and selecting for the highlights would do the trick.

Now for the image: This is a striking shot. On the one hand, as I think Sarah joked, the trash baskets are really quite ugly, and this ugliness, along with the woman's voluntary proximity to them, contributes to the unsettled mood. (What kind of person would sit so close to a huge garbage basket, and why?) On the other hand, the R2D2 shape of the trash can at right echoes the form of the woman and invites all sorts of questions and potential interpretations. The woman's blank expression and stiff posture -- which are expertly captured -- are both fascinating and deeply disturbing. It is a beautiful sunny day, but she is ill at ease and lost in either depressing or very dull thoughts.

I particularly like the irony of the garbage can. At first glance, it might seem to be a strange, ugly mistake: "Why in the world is Howard photographing someone sitting next to a garbage can?" Then you look at it, look at the woman, and things take on a different meaning. This is a deceptively simple photograph that sticks in your head and haunts you. The title contributes to the haunting feeling.

In many cases people of old age are "thrown" to the garbage can of life. What a significance is the chain that closes her together with that trash can. Strong figure and saying Howard with an innocent title.

you know, it's actually quite astounding how you manage to do this day after day after day. My jaw is hanging open, I'm shaking my head in disbelief, and if the truth be told, I'm also bloody jealous. (Oh and Howard, what do you mean I'm getting creative in my old age - I'm 42 - a spring chicken to say the least!)

Pnina does have a good take on this.

I have had that feeling of- 'oh no, there is only one seat left-and it's right next to the trash!' no one wants to sit next to the trash.....
