I like your composition but the lighting is less than ideal. Of course, if it's a short way home, then maybe you should come back to this location. Would like to see more details in the foreground.

This looks a beautiful way home David and worth the extra jaunt. :) It was a chilly morning with what appears to be a frost lightly dusting the banks....a very serene feel to this one.

Seriously, another nuanced and beautifully crafted image of a simple moment on time. Like Peta, I'd ask if that is frost in the foreground? Just lovely.

This is a lovely low-key landscape in its own right, full of the feeling of an unhurried walk home on a winter morning. But I think this image really has to be understood in the context of your recent series. In that context, the light here is in fact perfect: a very delicate touch of sunlight, just barely warming up the landscape here in front of us and over there, in the distance. Placed alongside the other images in the series, this is a step out of melancholy and wistfulness into the beginnings of optimism and, presumably, spring and everything it brings. The way home is *long*, but it's a way *home*, and there's light up there on the hill.

 

Very, very interesting, David. You are putting together a quietly brilliant set of images here. What you and I were saying the other day about Leigh's work holds of yours as well: Only in the context of the full set of images (and I'm sure there are more coming) is the significance of each one fully revealed, and the impact of the collection is stronger than the sum of its individual parts.

 

I'm also enjoying the return here to your trademark parallel "paths" of land and water side by side.

My monitor is quite bright, but it doesnt look really lowkey for me.

Conveys indeed optimistic feelings, expectant, uplifting. The hint of frost on the grass is wonderful, the lead-in is made skillfully, however the single bush near the center blocks my eyes a bit then. The sky was cooperative, a very consistent composition.

Thank you all for your comments. Thai, for some this light would not get their attention. For me I really like the subtleties at play here in this gentle light. I think Chris spoke of the light "barely warming this scene". Most of you noted with pleasure, I think, the gentle frost that Peta observed, "lightly dusting the banks." For me, this frost really carries this image, imparting to it some interesting tonal qualities. Carsten and others noted the composition. And I agree with Carsten about the bush, though being in a National Wildlife Refuge, its status is for the moment protected. Finally, I want to thank Chris for his kind words of encouragement on my work in this series. I am very appreciative Chris of your remarks.

David, are you proposing a general principle of Photoshop ethics? "Objects protected in real life are thereby also protected from being cloned out." ;-)

Looks like I'm late for the party and all the good observations have been taken. David, this is another wonderful image in what is an even greater series. Is there some ulterior motive at play here - an exhibition perhaps?

 

I would be interested in how you did this image as there seems to be a lot of difference between light and dark. Grad or RAW or both?

This one strikes me as a combination. It has the foreground gloom (in a good way) and the distant quiet optimism. I like the way you held back the colours and tones of the distant trees on the right -- if they were too overstated the coherence would be gone. This collection is gaining momentum...

The first thing it reminded me of was British canals, the old walkways along the water where the horses used to drag the boats. The layout of the posts and that lead pair with the just visible ripples reinforced the idea.

 

For some reason, I also find the position and curve of the two twigs in the lower left corner interesting. They almost seem to be trying to mirror the track and water.

 

The clouds on the left seem too bright on my monitor.

I love the use of your leading lines and the gentle curvilinear path to fallow. it seems peacfull and yet cold. I have the feeling when looking at this image of being chilled to the bone and wanting to get home quickly and yet not being able to. I like your images because no matter which on I look at I get an emotional feel to them.
