pnital 36 Posted March 3, 2006 Dogon is the mountain area of Mali. Very hard way to arrive to that part of land. No roads and it is a very rocky region . They live among the rocks, that is a typical landscape, and way home.. Another view of that region. Thanks for your thoughts. Link to comment

colin carron 58,916 Posted March 3, 2006 Pnina, you put us in that land, with the bare rocks and sparse trees. The figure seems to indicate the 'uphill struggle' of life there. I like the 'Constructions' shot very much and though it has no people in it it makes me wonder what sort of life makes people build their houses in such remote places. A '7' for the 'Constructions' shot! Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted March 3, 2006 for your comments. Colin, that region of Mali as far as I saw, is entirely a mountain region, to arrive to the villages , roads are no roads, we traveled with 4x4 vehicles, and it was a very hard travel. So thats why they live that way. I upload another version of the region WITH people in it. Thanks for all your written thoughts. Pnina Link to comment
mspanakis 0 Posted March 4, 2006 You see? the photograph(s) raised questions in Colin's mind = good sign! The construction photographs are extremely interesting and deserve to be shown independently. Link to comment

peta 0 Posted March 4, 2006 Very interesting captures Pnina, the first attached brought to my mind an old Nation Geographic from at least 40 years ago I read as a child that showed dwellings like that, maybe it was here, it always fascinated me. Link to comment

jeremy freeland 0 Posted March 5, 2006 I like this one and Construction v2, both for the quality of light (no surprise there:-) and the way you show the people in the their environment. I think this shot nicely captures the heat and the ruggedness of the surroundings, but also, with the well-lit greenery, how life is possible ... because there must be water. But I also like how the tree without leaves indicates that life isn't straightforward. It's interesting that the tones towards the bottom of the trunk of the leafless tree match those of the man's clothing. I like the message that both of them can live there, but it's a struggle. Best, Jeremy Link to comment
jim kerr 0 Posted March 7, 2006 Pnina, It seems that this composition is showing literally and symbolically how raw life is for these tough people....A well thought of photograph even if it did seem as a spur of the moment flash of insparation......Jim Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted March 7, 2006 To all of you. Lanny I will think of your suggestion. Jeremy, the tree is a Baobab, that you can see a lot there( do you remember the book of St. Exubery " The small prince" ? There I met that tree and being in Mali I saw it in real. Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted March 11, 2006 Pnina, did you have the opportunity to go into any of these *constructions* (homes, right?)? I find the tree very interesting, too. Is there enough soil under the rocks for trees to develop decent root systems? It looks like a very dry place. Link to comment
