it is a woodpecker. early morning birds tend 2 shrink wings & body 2gether. yep, difficult 2 catch like this, very very shy of movement! i had 2 sneek & crawl [ lol ] but got it in the end.

The bird is called a hoopoe, (I think that is the correct spelling). A remarkable name for a remarkable bird The bill is used for pulling insects out of crevices so strictly speaking it is not a woodpecker. The bill is not strong enough nor is the physiogomy correct for taking such a battering. This is pedantic I know, sorry. I have been an amateur ornithologist from childhood. The image is excellent. I'm struck by the quality of the light once again. Regards Ken.

i love the pink/red at the bottom of this. it really balances out the photo. the bird is gorgeous of course. i like his ruddy coloring. the detail in this is great and his markings add nice leading lines. another perfect shot.
