aepelbacher 0 Posted February 25, 2006 The city of Rocamadour was built into the side of a cliff. It's a gorgeous sight. You park your car at the bottom and walk up through steep "streets" and staircases and alleyways. Oh, and it was the place where I dropped & killed my favorite 50mm. :-( Please see the thread of this photo to learn more about the PEDA (Photographic Equipment Dropper Association) if you're interested in joining. Not to be un-hospitable, but I hope that you're not. As Vi rubs off on me more and more, I'll attach a couple more images of the place & surroundings so that you can get an idea.... Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted February 25, 2006 I'm classifying this as a landscape, but not sure if it fits or if it would be better as something else. Alas, Photo.net won't allow me to change my critique request in any way. :-) BUT ... any comments or ratings are appreciated!! :-D Link to comment
martin_lee5 0 Posted February 25, 2006 Nice shot, but I'd like to see more contrast. I'd also love to know where this is; it looks fascinating. Link to comment
lbattjes 0 Posted February 25, 2006 What a beautiful area! Would love to see this in person. Was going to ask to see the color version, and then there it was :) I think the B&W gives the area even more stature or drama if you know what I mean. Nicely done. Leslie Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted February 25, 2006 Thanks, Martin & Leslie!! First of all, the contrasts were a problem when I was playing with this. In fact, I decreased the contrast so that I would keep the detail in both the buildings and the trees. Maybe I will try using shadow/highlight first, and then play with the contrast. Thanks for pointing that out. AND, the real reason for choosing B&W for this was the totally boring sky. But when I changed it, I definitely liked what it did for the city itself much better than the color (where the green overpowers the grandeur of the city).Secondly, Rocamadour is in Southwest France ... not too, too far from Bergerac (about an hour and a half outside of Bordeaux). Try reading about it here. If you google the name Rocamadour, you'll come up with a bunch of sites and pictures dedicated to the city. It's so very unique and beautiful and historic....Thanks again for your visit. :-) Link to comment
denton_hoyer 0 Posted February 25, 2006 Nice composition and I agree a shot with more contrast would be interesting to see. It doesn't look like you had any strong lighting, light haze so the contrast is understandable. I think this is a place to return to many times under different lighting and even close up. pnital 36 Posted February 25, 2006 Lou Ann, I think that you did a good jobe in composing the place. The diagonal partition of the buildings brings interest to an already interesting place. Thanks as well for the links that I have looked at. worth a visit for sure! Pnina Link to comment
afterthoughts 0 Posted February 25, 2006 Lou Ann, I like the composition and I believe the choice of B&W improves the image. You might try using curves and using the eye dropper on the black to improve contrast. Have a good day. Warm Regards, Howard Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted February 25, 2006 I think a little more contrast, too, as has been suggested. I love the cropping of this, really accentuates the lines and flow of the buildings. Link to comment
ada-ipenburg 0 Posted February 25, 2006 Hi Lou Ann, I like this view and your crop very much. The whole scene of the village wich is builded so gradual against the mountain sloop stimulates my imagination and if I had taken this shot I can assure you that I was already busy to create a fairy-tale image out of it. Wow, what a wonderful shot! I agree with the others about the contrast. I've done an attempt to make the original version less grey but I'm not sure if you like it. I hope you don't mind and please tell me what you think about it. Greetings and have a nice weekend, Lou Ann! Ada. Link to comment
donnaalbers 0 Posted February 25, 2006 This does look like it's straight out of a fairy tale. . . very nice crop. . you have a nice flow through this image. . the b&w is a good choice here. .I agree that a tad more contrast is necessary. . . for localized change in contrast you could try dodge/burn. . . . to change the sky in the colored version, you can select the sky and then pick a blue gradient for fill. . . wilsontsoi 0 Posted February 25, 2006 Lou Ann, I like the fact that you add location names into the image detail tabs. It's that much more meaningful for viewers who have been, or plan to go there. I'll consider this a cornerstone of PEDA. ^_^ Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted February 26, 2006 Thank you all for the comments and suggestions. I ought to spend more time online reading and looking at the available PS tutorials than at *socializing* on photo.net ... but then I wouldn't have ya'll. :-) Thanks again!! Link to comment
cherlyn 1 Posted February 26, 2006 Definitely an interesting place that I would like to visit. Nice in B/W with the 'castle' surrounded by the 'forest'. Link to comment

ljk 0 Posted February 27, 2006 I do like the increased sharpness and contrast with this, but the image has fine merits...what a beautiful place! Like a fairy tale... Link to comment
jayme 0 Posted February 28, 2006 I really love this. The diagonal composition is beautiful along with the subject. Nice tonal range & detail. I went to our local art museum last week, they had a special exhibit of Dutch etchings. I played with this, just for fun, here's the result. Hope you enjoy my interpretation : ) It looks a little better larger, more detail. Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted February 28, 2006 Oh, yeah - I totally love your interpretation! Thanks, Jayme! I always enjoy your visits to my portfolio!! :-) Thanks to all for your positive feedback ... I loved this image and enjoyed the city itself when I was there. Link to comment

aepelbacher 0 Posted March 1, 2006 Cool, Claude!! At first I thought it was the same photo. I was sitting in a restaurant patio when I took this image. I wonder if you were at the same restaurant? :-) Link to comment
corbin 0 Posted March 1, 2006 No, we were looking from a good viewpoint from across the valley, and just stopped on the road. We came back that night and this is what I got. Link to comment
