marcadamus 1 Posted February 22, 2006 From my recent trip to Oregon's South Coast. Rock striations in the weather beaten headlands overlooking the endless rugged shoreline at twilight. I spent literally two full days hiking up and down the coast looking for a spot like this and was finally rewarded with my favorite image in quite a while. Exposure was 3 minutes at F16. ISO 100. Minimal PS work. Thanks for your comments. Link to comment
jforrester 0 Posted February 22, 2006 You've certainly got your process down to a science - I think it's great - congratulations. Link to comment
dom n 0 Posted February 22, 2006 i love the sharp, defined, detailed clarity of the cliffs against the soft rushing smoothness of the sky and water. gorgeous feeling to this one. beautiful colors, just so vivid and alive. love the lighting here. amazing composition too. and the angle at which you took this is perfect. so peaceful. i long to see it in real life now. will king 0 Posted February 22, 2006 Marc, your whole portfolio is a 7/7 and this photo is no exception. What I love most about this shot is the long exposure to create such movement in the sky. How long after sunset is this shot? I would love to go on a photography expedition with you but I just don't want to hike for 2 days! Link to comment
marcadamus 1 Posted February 22, 2006 Hiking (scouting) is definitely an integral and necessary part of what I do. I enjoy every minute of it though, even when not gazing upon scenes such as this. It was captured about 40 minutes after sunset. Link to comment

juan_martinez 0 Posted February 23, 2006 Very nice, it seems it was definitely worth the 2 day hike. Great job! Link to comment
Erik Lundh 0 Posted February 23, 2006 Mark, This is another awesome shot. The sky effect is pretty cool with a 3 min. exposure. I'm wondering what it would be like with a little more natural looking sky. Not that this doesn't work, just a thought. Link to comment
jimg 0 Posted February 23, 2006 You've done a great job capturing this dramatic landscape. The lighting, water, the clouds and the long exposure work exceptionally well. The one nit pick that I have is the lighting on the cliffs drops off into the shadows quite rapidly. I can only guess that since this is around the level of the horizon that this is where the neutral density graduated filter transitioned. I would recommend masking the area and dodging the top edge of the cliffs to match (as best as possible) the lighting found on the rest of the cliff. You'll have to let me know if this is less so the case on a larger version and perhaps a little exaggerated with the smaller file displayed here. Link to comment
marcadamus 1 Posted February 23, 2006 Thanks Jim. I took several others with much more detail in the trees but favor this one. The darkness leaves the emphisis directly on the cliffs and really makes it for me. I appreciate your opinion though. Cool shots from the big wave comp, by the way! Those guys are nuts. hugo tuffen 0 Posted February 24, 2006 i must admit i normally find grad filtered coastal shots a bit of a tired cliche but this one is just stunning and shows that it can be worthwhile. i love the textures and light on the foreground rock and the colours of the sea, as well as the cloud textures. beautiful work! iandaisley 0 Posted February 24, 2006 Time & effort well rewarded. I think this is an outstanding image, and that's not a word I use very often. I can understand why you are pleased with it. Cheers, Ian. Link to comment
PeterKrenek 26 Posted February 24, 2006 Outstanding long exposure landscape. Did you lighten the rocks in PS or is this natural light ? Best regards, Peter Link to comment
marcadamus 1 Posted February 24, 2006 Both. The rocks, naturally appeared to pick up more light than would be observed naturally during the long exposure from the brightness on the horizon. I also selectively did some minor dodging in some areas for better tonal balance and fine tuning of contrasts. Link to comment
kahkityoong 0 Posted February 26, 2006 Your exposure and use of filter is once again perfect. The sky has some unusual looking tones. Is this what it looked like or the result of the ND/reprocity failure? Link to comment
