Vladimir,

I hope your want a real critique and not just someone telling you what a great photographer you are. 1. As others will tell you – good exposure – good composition - good focus – wonderful catch lights – her skin looks great – she is beautiful, actually she is stunning – reminds me of Princess Grace – love your specular highlights on her lips 2. You need a hair light or back light to separate her from the background, you also have lost all detail in her hair – or a lighter background would work (but may not look as good as a hair light) 3. As a general rule it is not a good idea to photograph someone from the front – it makes a female look wider than she would like to appear – have her turn a bit sideways 4. Do not photograph the flat of the hand – a. doesn’t look graceful or feminine – have her turn her hand so that you shoot the edge with her fingers cascading 5. You do not show her hands where they connect to the rest of her arms – that makes them appear to belong to someone else who is reaching in to touch her 6. You do show where the “v” of her top ends and crop below this – very good 8. You have a great feeling coming from her – it is intense and summoning – like a witch casting a spell (a complement among my Wicca friends)

Other than the few comments that may improve the shot a little, you did a very nice job of capturing her – both inside and out. I would love to be there when her mother, and especially her father, looks at this photograph of their daughter. Too often we, as artsy portrait photographers, forget to think, “What would her parents think of the way I present their daughter on a website where so many can see her?” Unfortunately, there is more than one way to bring tears to parent’s eyes.

Stunning portrait. I don't agree with some of Mark Chartrand's comment: photographing her from the front works very well here, in fact I've seen so many good 'front portraits' that I wonder whether this is a valid 'rule'. About the hands: it may be a rule as well, but in this case both hands look lovely: beautifully textured with an almost 'sculptural' quality. And about her hands being 'disconnected': I don't think for a second that those hands are from another person. The hands add a special quality that sets this portrait apart. This image shows what is generally true for all photography rules: they are meant to be broken from time to time.

Words cannot do this image justice! Just know that I applaud your talent!

I wish, however, that you and the other leading portrait photographers on PHOTO.NET would take a few moments to describe the CREATION of your images, and not merely the technical settings and equipment used. Most serious photographers can follow a diagram, light and camera settings in attempting to reproduce their own shoots, but ESP (Emotion Sells Photography) is really special and the key (IMO) to any successful imagery. Addressing such issues as: coming up with the pre-planned session, choosing THE model(s) for accomplishing that photo session, how to elicit the looks/feelings from the model(s), why the choice of that particular lighting (broad, short, butterfly, etc.), would really give insight into you, the photographer, and even more into the final image.

Thanks, again, for sharing and responding to this request,

Richard
