Polo Practice at Shandur II (best larger)

Karl Schuler

It is a crop of about 70 % of the original frame, shot with the 45 mm lens. I used a tripod to shoot there a series of photos. The rider in the center and his dust are cloned in from another shot. The film was a Fuji RDP III slide film 100. Shutter speed must be around 1/1000 as the light at 3700 meters above sea level was very strong.

Based on the fedback from different photo.net members I have

reworked this photo from scratch. In my view I have been able to

improve it considerably. What I am not sure about are the colours.

After several hours on the screen I am often not able to assess

properly the matching of the colour tones. Your feedback is highly

appreciated. Karl

Karl, was it a concious decision to leave the faces of the players darkened - perhaps in order to concentrate the mind of the viewer on the game and not on the individuals?

Hi Ben, in the print there are some slight details visible in the faces, but they have been lost in the transformation for the web presentation. Karl

I too would like to see some more detail in the riders, but it is backlit, afterall. The backlit dust saves the photo from being banal. Still a nice shot.

Ahhhh, I spoke too soon! I critiqued the photo before reading your technical details. Sad to learn that extra riders and dust were added with photoshop. Effectively, this is known as 'cheating'. Haha. You have no idea how many telephone poles and gum wrappers I'm dying to remove but just can't bring myself to do it. Oh well, if the final result is all you're interested in, at least it's pleasing.

The dust trails and beautiful action of the horses are great, and the backdrop is gorgeous. The colour looks fine here, more so than the previous version, but I find the contrast a little high and the light a little low overall. I do like this version better, except for the LH horse and rider, who stand out a lot better in the earlier version. Here I feel they don't add much because I can't see them well enough. Deleting the bystanders and first rider's pack are definitely worthwhile.

After reading the other comments. I feel that you have made all the right choices. Too much detail in the riders would take the composition too much away from the granduer of the moment. A truly remarkable image. Regards Ken.

Fooled me. Not good practice if it were a doc shot submitted for publication. I was going to say that some fill, at least on the foreground rider, would have been nice. He is what I focus on and identify with.

I love the sense of action in this shot and the blue and white backdrop is super! If you didn't use a polarizer (can't tell if you did or not), I think that is one thing that could've benefitted this shot.
