Jonathan, this is an area where hot springs are active just like Rotoura in New Zealand. Above the crack in the mountain are some active hot spring activity where underground water are channeled to hot spring pools. The elevation is quite high here so it's quite cold in Brastagi. Tourists and locals come here to enjoy the hot spring mineral water in the pool which is supposed to be good for the health.

Beautiful landscape and caption, dear Alec. The sulphur fumes rising from the crevices amidst lush vegitation is beautiful. I like your new portrait in the bio-page.
