Taken at beautiful Lani Kai beach in Kailua, Oahu. Just wish I had

added couple of Coronas in the sand...

All opinions are appreciated.

Long time no see! But delighted to see a great tropical capture here.

Are you still faithful to film and to Velvia 50 in particular?

I've switched to digital (Nikon D-200) thanks to the S.O.B. who stole my bag with all my analogic equipment!

Holy cow Alberto! Thats my nightmare too. Where did the bum take it from? Did you leave it in the car, home, in the field? Total bummer.

I will be sticking with film for many years. Just purchased a world class scanner. Though it arrived broken...waiting for a replacement, shipping company must have dropped it. Film just works for me. Velvia 50 is still king in my book. Though you have to love the ease, convenience and workflow of digital! My son has the D2X. It is amazing in many ways. Perhaps one day...

What I love about this composition is the implication of what is not seen. The shadows of the unseen palms not only add interest to the sandy beach but also draw one's imagination out beyond the frame of the captured image.

I do not think that I have to mention that the color is perfection (well, I guess I mentioned it!). The beach umbrella has a very pronounced 3-dimensional look.

Vince, I think this one should do well, even without the Corona's. Regards.

Yes this mexican beer would be the finishing touch, I can imagine me sitting there, bottle corona on my mouth, with a little slice off lemon, and a beautifull waiter serving me, some funky music......... ohhh I am out off my winter depression, I have to visit this picture more often LOL

Els, from grey Netherland, but with a warm and colorfull feeling.

I tried to answer much earlier but my connection went down. Below are my comments to your question

On the pilferage

I spent most of October and November in a first class hotel in Barcelona teaching my seminars during the week and shooting the wonderful Catalonian scenary during week ends. During the week, while I was in my seminars in the same hotel, I kept my photo back sack in the closet of my room. Someone -according to the police, a specialist informed by a hotel staff member- broke in and took only my photo equipment. Happily enough, the hotel insurance is taking charge of the problem.

On digital and film

Apart from the D-200,I alsobought a second hand Contax G1 witha Biogon 28mm and a Planar 45mm.I take it loaded with B&W film. I'm considering getting, as well, a Mamiya 7 and load it with my beloved Velvia for my castles shots.

You can check my Nikon D-200 first photos in my latest uploadsand my latest presentation titled Oriental New Year. Itlooks like they are having some success...

Regards

What I especially like about this picture is the colors. The colors are very crisp and clear. It's a perfect holiday post card. I must say, considering that today I walked on a frozen lake taking pictures, this is a quite a different place. Haha! Anyway, good job!

Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts. I will look at your D200 work soon Alberto. I am happy to hear the hotel's insurance should be able to help with this issue.

I find it another normal day at Photo.net with the upload of this photograph. During the last couple of years the site has been headed nowhere but in the wrong direction. I have not posted any photographs since November 5th, and only five since April of 2005. Yet because of this lousy system Brain Mottershead has implemented, this image here, though receiving a total of seven rates through the annonymous Rate categories, does not qualify for any of the default TRP views. Obviously it did not receive the five needed from whichever RR is needed. To be honest I don't even know which is needed any longer nor give 2 cents about whats what. All I know is that I have posted my first photograph in three months and even thhough the ratings averages are good enough to qualify for a little bit of exposure, it instead gets on NO default TRP pages. That's none as in ZERO. Why is this? What is the point of even posting an image if one cannot get a reasonable or fair shot at some visibility and the subsequent feedback that comes with it?

The site still belongs to the dogs...

Great job sir Brian. You have single handedly destroyed the system altogether. To call it a total mess... is being too kind.

Vincent, this is lovely. Agreed with Walter - the umbrella seems to jump right off the screen. Winter blahs here - Lake Michigan isn't even frozen over, so no sense in going out shooting this year. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah Vince, I wish I could give you some uplifting words on how things will get better, but I am afraid that is not to be. The ban is off of my Feedback Forum postings so, recently, I made a suggestion regarding the Top Photographers Gallery. Mottershead refuses to hear anything about it. My Dad would have said, "it's like talking to a brick wall".

The trolls are still trolling, the mates are still slap-happy with ratings, and new methods for cheating the system seem to appear every day. Just take a look at today's (2/3/06) current default TRP...absolutely unbelievable!

Mottershead had what seemed to be some good ideas on paper, so to say, but they fell apart in practice. Why he just could not have taken simple, direct measures is unfathomable to me.

But on a happier note, since you mentioned about the dogs; have you seen Chris Appoldt's latest? Really a great photograph! Regards.

Thanks Jen. I too like the umbrella. My wife hates the chair I bought. I told her it was on sale. She liked it a little better. Next time I will try to find a prettier chair.

Yep Walt, a brick wall sounds right on. Think about it; 7 anonymous ratings on this image. But since they weren't through the correct anonymous queue, I get zero visibility. This image is not even on the default TRP list at all. I have more fun taking out the trash nowadays than spending time over here...

Aloha.

Geez Vincent, long time no see! Exiled in Hawaii must be really painful :)

Beautiful image, wonderful choice of subject, inviting. Colors are vibrant & eye-catching. The color contrasts & how they blend into each other is beautiful. I also like the palm tree shadows, adds interest in the foreground.

This almost looks like a painting & would make a really good one too. 7/6 If I could see the Coronas in the sand 7/7 :)

A classic Vincent shot...Deeply saturated colors, great composition (I agree with Walters comments) and perfect exposure. But, watch out for those blues in the clouds.

Ok...I am ready to come there. Better have the room in the basement ready for me. :-))) The only problem is that once I am there, I may not want to leave. LOL!!

My sister and brother-in-law lived a block from here for a few years. This picture brings back memories for me. It was a fantastic place to visit, for a Canadian! Thank you for all of your posts. I'll buy an original from you, one day.

This is a superb image. But...it seems to me that despite the complaint about the TRP's, plenty of folks found this image, as I did. You deservedly got many ratings and great comments. Hang in there. Accept the bitter with the sweet and keep those great images coming. Those who appreciate your work will find you.

I totally support your frustration, which is mine, as well.

However, I suggest you do what many of us do now. Submit for critique only. No rates allowed.

Let the empty-brained, eyeless-critics-without-comments do their job on another guys' pics!

Vincent, For what it's worth I like this one too. I thought I had seen it before! Your technical details helped clear that up for me. This vertical offering works very well with the palm tree shadows nicely breaking up an otherwise too large & relatively uninteresting mass of sand in the foreground. The islands echo the two objects on the beach but it's the colourful umbrella that really sets this one off. Very tempting indeed. As for the cold beer, better to have that by your tripod so as to quickly cool you down when your brow starts to sweat from looking too long in the hot sun through the viewfinder. Is the blue in the clouds that Jay speaks of controllable? Is that even desireable? I tend to agree with Alberto on the ratings game but then I'm not interested in maximum exposure nor in ratings without comments (driveby's). Perhaps my views would change if I were a pro. Always a pleasure viewing your shots, especially at this time of the year:-) Best, LM.

Vincent, glad to see your post. This is a great shot. A great trifecta, sand, sea and sky. With the umbrella ahchoring.

Hi Vincent! Great to see you posting again! I have to say that although I understand your thoughts on the ratings system and the TRP ... there are some of us who check back to your portfolio regularly just to drool over your latest uploads. Really ... you do wonderful work, and it's just a joy to be treated to a new one every once in a while. Keep them coming, if only for your groupies. :-) Warm regards!

Thanks for the comments folks. I removed a measure of blue from the clouds actually when I first edited this. Can re-examine/adjust that another day. It's there in the original, and often, I've noticed, this is what it really looks like in real time. Why do the clouds have a blueish tint in the tropics, above the ocean, in the middle of a summers day? I am not too sure. Perhaps UV rays, reflections etc. Thanks for your observations though.

Coronas would make this one pertfect, I agree. Next time for sure.

Is great to see you around Ivan. Lets see some pics of your new son, Daniel. Hopefully he looks like his mommy :)

Thanks to all of you for stopping by. A hui hou!
