lupine 0 Posted February 1, 2006 Something very compelling about this image. I'm not certain whether it's the motion of her hand, her eye making contact with the viewer, don't know but there is something there. About the only distsraction seems to be the shadow, watch, bracelet on her wrist. Otherwise, a very wonderful nude portrait. Congratulations. Link to comment
fotoguy1 0 Posted February 1, 2006 Yeah, what he said. It is a very nice photo - different from most others (original). Link to comment
eye2eyephoto 0 Posted February 1, 2006 I don't usually comment negatively.. But my first reaction on seeing this shot in "Top Photos", (especially after just recieving 3/3's on portraits that I actually WORKED at), was "gee.. if it shows a body part it must be good, so perhaps I should be more opportunistic".. Now granted, I know that MY images aren't very daring.. in fact I KNOW I'm pretty boring. And I guess this is a little daring. FAR more "daring" than anything in my portfolio.. But.. I just don't get it. The light is flat, the composition is awkward, angle is horrible.. it just looks like a lazy snapshot from the other side of the bed to me.. and a poor one at that. And yet the ratings are great. There are FAR better images all over photonet (and in your portfolio) that get poorer ratings.. probably because the subjects are clothed. Go figure. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted February 1, 2006 I completely agree with Jack on this one. I went to check out the top-photos, saw this one and was left scratching my head. I rarely comment negatively on photos either, but this one has inspired me to do so. Composition is lacking, the lighting is average at best. I just don't see any redeeming qualities to this image. Now mind you, I'm no expert on portraits or candids or whatever you would consider this image. I guess on this one, I just don't get it. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted February 1, 2006 A somewhat original photo, but not an asthetically pleasing image IMHO. I cannot fathom how anyone would see this as a 7/7. Maybe these are the same people that always rate my photos 3/3 lol. Link to comment
alberto.prt 0 Posted February 1, 2006 Sorry, could someone explain why this image can be seen in the top rated with 7/7 (5 ratings), while having a lot of lower ratings? By the way, you have better shots in your portfolio. Regards Alberto Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted February 1, 2006 Alberto, the reason this photo is still in the number 1 position of top photos is because the category only updates once a day or so..which is stupid. Also, the 'top photos' category does not count any ratings unless they are posted anonymously. In other words, people like yourself who rate the photo will count against the photo's overall rating, but the top photos category ranks photos using only anonymous ratings from those who have rated through the 'rate recent' critique forum or similar. At least that is my understanding of how the system works. Link to comment
toddk1 0 Posted February 1, 2006 I agree as well, technically this image is poorly done. It looks like a snapshot gone wrong. Yes, the motion in the hand and the sharp eye are interesting but that is it. You could crop only that, up the contrast to give the shot some life and then you might have something nice. bbond 0 Posted February 1, 2006 I have to agree as well...my first impression was that the photographer meant to post on RateMyRack.com Link to comment
mrhaydon 0 Posted February 1, 2006 Yes it is poor, no doubt. I've seen a few of these recently. I might be wrong but could it be that the photographer timed the posting of this snap, phoned his/her fellow snappers and said 'as soon as you see my poor nude snapshot pop up, rate it 7/7' !? easily done. Guest Guest Posted February 1, 2006 I don't know if that's the case Michael, but it sure seems that there's some shenanigans going on here. Highly unlikely that a photo of this quality would magically get 6 anonymous 7/7 ratings. Link to comment
muriel.jf.arts 0 Posted February 2, 2006 I am wery please of theses comments! Making jealous some good photographers and others (beleiving they are..)is quite pleasant! muriel caron 0 Posted February 2, 2006 how wonderful is this shot ! so alive. It remembers a Cartier Bresson'photo... Thank you JFD for this sincere moment. Link to comment
atos 0 Posted February 2, 2006 IMO, this shot is seird at least. Moreover, I find it very unpleasant. Here is nothing to talking about, and moreover - no reasons to put it on a top. Somebody here remembers Cartier Bresson... poor Cartier Bresson! Link to comment
muriel.jf.arts 0 Posted February 2, 2006 Sergey I am sorry you don't like However pleased you had time to write while looking at it...or are you more interested than what you said...? Link to comment
muriel.jf.arts 0 Posted February 2, 2006 I am so please to have such a success and so many visitors for this photo. I can't hide it and I thank you all very much. I will not make any more arguments with a few guys who take photography for anything but pleasure and forgot humour and fair play. Amicalement Link to comment
posarlie 0 Posted February 2, 2006 that is a mistery how a picture like this can be in top rated photos! Link to comment
alberto.prt 0 Posted February 2, 2006 Thanks for your answer Clint. And I suppose it is too late now to get to the image and rate it anonymously ... you are supposed to go through the whole list of submissions, aren't you? Or is there a better way? Just to understand how this cryptic system works. Alberto Link to comment
robert semnic 0 Posted February 3, 2006 I will join most of the other authors in low rating of this photo. I usualy do not spend time on bad photos and do not rate low. Composition, light, person, movement, everything for me is under average. It is a miracle how this photo managed to recieve so many comments. Link to comment
John Peri 997 Posted February 3, 2006 I think this is a very funny thread. The success of a photo is a function of how much attention it draws and not what any individual thinks of it. The fact that so many people love to hate it is pertinent to it's significance. Actually, I find it a compelling image and I understand why people are drawn to it! Link to comment
mykol 0 Posted February 3, 2006 My intitial reaction was I don't often see photos like this at the top of the pile so I took a proper look. The comments do make me wonder about how people deal with their judgement coming into question. As an artform, it's healthy that we are all forced to sometimes re-evaluate what we see as 'good' or 'bad'. The more I've seen of this photograph, the more I've liked it - much like a good record is rarely instantly loved but grows on you. Congrats jf Link to comment
AJHingel 127 Posted February 3, 2006 In my view you seem all to be right, but you comment on different things. According to a number of very valid criteria this is indeed a bad photo (angle, composition, blurred etc) but it is also a photo with a very pronounced spell to it (the gesture of the girl, the eye, the surroundings of tissues etc). I therefore understand if someone would say that it is a photo that is doomed to receive 3-4/3-4 or 6-7:6-7 - but never 5/5. In front of such a photo you take position. That might be the ultimate quality of the thing. I would love to see the similar type of discussion when we next time get a 7/7 photo on the screen of the traditional scene of over saturated landscapes. Link to comment
