Hi Walter, the rust we see make your title amusing. To me, at least. I like the image though I find myself a little off balance with your choice to keep the fence post off vertical. That said, I think it was the right choice and what adds to the interest of the shot.

Is that a spider on a web?

Not sure what you see in this as is, Walter, as I can't quite get visually engaged with it. I hope you don't mind that I took a crack at editing it as I thought about it. I cropped down to what I found to be most compelling in it, took out the blue tint (sky reflection does that as you know), deepened colors, brightened and added contrast to the rust, and toned down the white a little. just food for thought.

Jamie , the fence post has quite a lean to it and I saw no reason to correct it , thank you for commenting. Ben S., thank goodness we are all different in our approach. I hear what you are saying , but I find your crop takes away the setting

and makes me feel claustrophobic. I was also interested in the variety of detail in the original. I especially liked the blue complementing the rust colour ; you say, ' the sky does that ', that is exactly the point. The Blue is not a cast on an emulsion - it is a reflection of the sky - a fact , reality ! I saw no reason to remove it. But we all see things differently ;o).

My own regret about the shot is that it is not sharp throughout ... thanks for your comments , Ben, regards , Walter , Downunder.

Walter, thanks so much for telling me what you see, that really opened my eyes more to this. yes, the great beauty is that we see different things. like a poem, once released we can't anticipate all reactions to an image and i find that great fun. its fun to chat, feel free to take apart anything i've posted as well. Cheers, Ben

I like it the way it is- The blue really does bring out the rust color. I also like the wood and wire present to add even more contrast in the form of texture. The lean works for me as well. Good job.

btw, have you tried photoshop? there's a feature, unsharp mask, that you can use to sharpen selected portions if you'd like.

Gee, I had simply been going to remark that I found this image pleasing. But now, having read the earlier critiques, I wonder if the discussion regarding this image is not running the risk of becoming unhinged. ;-)

Nonetheless, I like the contrast of tones between the finely detailed grain of the aged wood and the bumpliness of the overpainted but still emerging rust. Also the contrast between the gradual relaxing of stress in the ageing and drying wood with the continued stress on the rusting bolt which will eventually pull out of the drying wood thus relieving the otherwise enduring stress in the knotted fencewire. As well as the way in which I see the light play subtly across the diagonal of the image from upper left to lower right.
