Rural Mailbox

Hand-held, approx. f/5.6 at 1/60 sec. The sun was setting behind me, and the light was low and uneven but quite dramatic.

Last September 11th, I was driving on U.S. 40 in eastern Utah and saw this mailbox and

flag, and was moved by the simple pride shown, far from the nearest town.

Sam & Jack, thank you.

It occurs to me now that maybe I should've made it clear that I'm not trying to make a political statement, here. I think that the date helped me decide to stop, go back and take a close look at this little scene, but the scene itself is not uniquely American: many parts of the world have rural areas, many countries have flags and mailboxes, and citizens proud to display one next to the other. And (as I state in my bio), I'll try not to confuse you with your government, if you'll do the same for me.

But love of one's birthplace, which is so essentially human as to predate history, expressed so clearly, in (as this city boy sees it) the middle of nowhere, makes a striking image. Plus the rapidly fading light was really incredible, better in the emulsion of my memory than I can ever show.

Nice, one can really feel the loneliness, if a bit too dark for me on the foreground. I'm appreciating it non-politically as you referred... and I like it! Cheers, Alex

I understand the sentiment , Don , and it isn't nation-specific. Plainly and simply expressed and well caught. But I , too , would have preferred it a little brighter... Best regards. Walter , Downunder.
