lucyhollis 2 Posted January 24, 2006 While walking and exploring the island I came across this scene many times. Young boys through to their grandfathers can be found meandering along the paths, heads down, busy in knitting, while their female counterparts are toiling in the fields. Any comments are welcome and appreciated. Thanks, Lucy Link to comment
gungajim 75 Posted January 24, 2006 I would like it better if you had cropped out the left side of photo and let the boy and his shawdow be the focus. However, the photo does a great job of capturing a little known local cultural practice. Link to comment
sef1664877429 0 Posted January 27, 2006 Not sure I agree with a crop. It would need to be right up, so you can see better what he's up to, although he probably wouldn't be happy with a camera stuck in his face. As it is(and without a telephoto to get closer discretely), this was probably the best decision. Showing his environment. I like the details on the left, the winding stream and rise of the land, the trees, all help to balance out the boy and his shadow. Shame about the overexposed clouds, but the weather's the weather... Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted January 28, 2006 While I think I understand the impetus behind Jim's comments (wishing you would have got in closer, shot the boy in a vertical format, cropping him at the waist, so you could focus on his face, hands, and knitting), I definitely wouldn't crop this one. The space on the left helps compositionally and this works as a very good environmental portrait that captures some of the essence of this boy and his life. Overall, looking through your portfolio, I'm really impressed with your use of color and how you compose your photos. When viewing your work, I see a real sense of purpose--conscious decision-making that gives your work a distinctive style. Looking forward to seeing more. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted February 3, 2006 I like the way this is presented. You see the environment around the child, which good. It's odd this is a boy, knitting, standing in the middle of some rocks! Interesting shot! Link to comment
AaronFalkenberg 0 Posted February 26, 2006 I really couldn't put it any better than Bob. You give as much attention to the landscape as for the people in it, and that makes for compelling photography. Link to comment
