Nice shot. It would benefit from a bit more sharpness. You can never be too sharp. Especially with birds. And that is one of the challenges with birds. They don't give a damn if you can get them in the frame or not. And they will not stand still. Take a dart gun next time. Then glue the bird to the bird bath. Of course, you would release the bird after it came to. Just kidding. Now every birder on photo.net will be sending me hate mail.

Hi Joe. Regarding the lack of apparent sharpness, have you tried applying some USM (unsharp masking) in Photoshop or other similar editing program? I have also found that low contrast images, such as this, do not seem to appear to the eye as sharp as high contrast images do. One can tweak this a little by making a slight Curves adjustment in Photoshop. If you are worried about posting a "manipulated" photograph, these are techniques that would have normally been done in the darkroom with a whole lot of work, and they still qualify as "unmanipulated" according to the PhotoNet FAQ.

One other consideration is that you are posting very large file sizes. The PhotoNet computers downsize large images so that they can be conveniently displayed. Unfortunately this process destroys the image detail and sometimes the color too. Try resizing to a smaller image size before you upload and see how it works.

Nice Cardinal by the way. I tried some USM and Curves adjustment on this photograph and posted the result. If it offends you let me know and I will remove it. Regards.
