Was there any way to change your position to eliminate the distracting background? That's the downfall of zoos and aquariums - you don't always have control of what's behind the animal. I've found zooming in very close can help and also using a DOF to blur the background works, too. Of course, with a whale, you probably don't want a close-up of his face only!
